  • Do you believe in Karma?

Well, it would be an egoistical thing to claim that I have done such good things to deserve good fortune... it's one of them ivory tower things, don't you think?

Maybe it's some sort of balance in the universe. Do you believe in that? You can also call it God as well, that God holds a balance. Then again, there are so many unfortunate who never had any good things, who were sick from the birth, died early and in pain. This is mind boggling to me.

Lately I've been running hot. I've mentioned it few times, but this year has been nothing but misery and pain until few months ago. Cancer, getting de facto fired, nothing but bad stuff, right? On the other hand, I just learned that the tumor has not come back. In fact, the MRI showed that the surgeons were able to get EVERYTHING out and everything looks completely normal, meaning that my prognosis for the future is good. It was such a relief. If there was something wrong, treatments here we go. Now, I just have to get another scan some time early next year and that's it. It means that at the moment I'm healthy and nothing dramatic is going to happen any time soon.

Everything else is going great as well. Job (company), research... things are really working out. I'm at a point where I get invited to speak and where we have been recognized as players in the field, as we get invited to talk about what we do and see if we have mutual interests. Of course our competitors are vastly bigger than us, like 100 times bigger, but they have validated our existence by saying we are their competition. And we're going to kick their asses!

What do you mean? Is it more prevalent in Finns than others?

You have a great attitude. It's people like you who really benefit from going through some rough times because you learn from your experience, and mature as a person.

With regard to Karma, I definitely believe that our actions have aggregate effects, but the misfortunes that befall us aren't necessarily connected to some transgression we may have committed in the past. Bad things happen to good people, and vice versa. A lot of life's fortunes or misfortunes are the result of chance - not a visitation of divine favor or disapproval.

I'm glad to hear your prognosis is good.

There is no karma. It's incredibly egotistical to think that the universe gives enough of a **** about me to keep a running account.

Yeah, I kind of agree with that! And that many times the reason why people act "well" is in fact for very selfish reasons, the whole ivory tower thing. Usually these people are very judgmental as well. I never got the terrorist point either, the "blow yourself up and you get 40 virgins", I mean that's totally sex-driven motivation. Don't do sex, but then if you're good, your prize is group sex with virgins, wtf?!

Caligastia, thanks, I guess. Yes, there are good things that come with bad things... today was the first day that I actually said aloud to myself, that "it's good to be alive". It felt good saying so

I don't believe in karma, but thnk that it is good to live as if you did believe in it.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

No, but I do believe that our actions have consequences. Our lives are shaped by what we can change and what we cannot. We can't control what is due to random chance, or fate. But we can control our actions. Even that their consequences will accrue to us is not guaranteed us, because nothing is guaranteed us. But at least we can act. And that is all we can do.
