On the upside I do think Calgary is a decent place to live with good work potential and nice outdoor activities (in the nonwinter months) but I think a lot of people would disagree that such long and cold winters make for a "livable" place. A lot of us are pussies who don't like the cold. That list likely does scew in favor of countries with universal government run health care despite how good it is or how people fair under private insurance. It's a common problem with such lists.

Are you ****ing serious? IN THE NONWINTER MONTHS?

      Jesus ****ing christ, Oerdin.

Some of the best skiing/snowboarding in the world, some of the most beautiful winteresque locations and hiking trails are right outside the city. There's far more outdoor activities to do in Calgary in either winter or summer than some ****hole like San Diego.

      I agree you are a *****.

I take cold over the heat in San Diego any day. You can bundle up if you're cold outside, you're ****ed if it's 100 degrees.

Luckily it almost never gets to be 100 degrees and instead stays a nice pleasant 72 year round.

Perfect for those of us who don't do cold. Technically, in the winter it might get down to 60 degrees and everyone will scream it is cold and in the summer there might be a heat wave were it gets up to 85 degrees and everyone will scream it is too hot but we must all make sacrifices.

Doesn't matter. You'll never know they were there when all is finished. Zero impact.

Don't overstate it Wezil. Remediation can bring the land back to what it was with similar vegetation over less oily sands. Done right then yes visually you will not be able to tell they were there. Thats a very different thing than zero impact

Here are more relevant metrics. In the affordability index, Indianapolis holds the top spot for major US cities. It is a pleasant city, has a median house price of $96,000 and a median income of $68,700 per annum. You have a ridiculously high standard of living in Indianapolis -- few there are "house poor." I can see why Japher moved nearby.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Sorry Asher. I don't consider anything to do with ice to be "decent outdoor activities". Sure, they might be fun for an afternoon or even a day but six months? Nope, that's just barmey. That's what makes SoCal so great. You can sky or snow board for an afternoon and then go home and not worry about the cold... well, forever.

                          Half and half...it's perfect.

Jealousy sucks, Oerdin, get over it.

SoCal is polluted, dirty, crowded, hot, and in general a cliche and dull ****ing place. San Diego is great for hipsters and retirees -- nothing that would actually qualify as outdoor activities.

OK, so you get the Indy 500, but there must be some reason why no-one wants to live there. Usually, low prices mean few jobs.

Exactly. Owning your own home is nice, but is it worth it if you're bored to death all the time?
