If you take the battle honors/combat experience of the Welsh Guards(formed in 1915) and compare them with the Royal 22nd Regiment(Van Doos)(formed 1914), you’ll notice by simple comparison that though the R22R might have more VC’s than the Welsh Guards, the Welsh Guards have a hell of a lot more varied combat experience.

Wow! That means without a doubt that the Welsh are better fighters than the French. Thank you for your interesting and insightful analysis.

For the most part, the French have performed rather poorly when facing the forces of the British Empire. Also, the French were soundly defeated at the Plains of Abraham, even though they had the advantage of both holding an elevated position, plus knowing the terrain.

The French are arrogant, and this arrogance has proven to be their downfall in many conflicts.

Though to be honest, the American Revolutionaries probably could have still pulled off a victory, though the war would have no doubt dragged on until at least 1800(as a conservative guess).

The British strategy of moving south did more to defeat the British Army in the colonies than the French did. After all, it was the lack of Loyalist recruits, a weakened army and chaos in the previously held territories (along with a fair amount of guerilla warfare) that helped to turn the tide of the war in favor of the Continentals.

and oerdin, it's not that there isn't some truth in what you say, but i can well imagine your experience of the 3rd world is that of an american tourist whose grasp of the local culture and norms involves saying "do you speak english?!" at ever increasing volumes. i've taken the trouble to do my research and learn portuguese.

and it's funny you think there will be fewer opportunties in brasil than where i live at the moment. i'd love to know how you work that out...

Oh, I don't know. I'd say the French won the 100 years war pretty handily.

I'll admit most of it is as a tourist or as an American soldier stationed in other countries though often for months on end and sometimes up to a year. Also, for travels in Latin America at least, I speak Spanish so it was not "Do you speak English?" at ever higher volumes.

As for fewer opportunities... It depends on your education and skill set but even in the worst of Britain there are many more opportunities then in most 3rd world countries. Especially if one is entrepreneurial in spirit as well developed capital markets and venture capital supplies form the basis of most of the economic superiority of the 1st world over the 3rd world.
