We can't blame epidemiologists for being sociopaths, or entomologists for being Kurtz.
Good play on the frigid, though.

To be fair, 90%+ of theses/dissertations are just working for someone, doing what they tell you and writing/documenting it (whether a lab, NGO, government org, etc). There are very few studies that qualify, upon perusal, as "independant".

I wish mine wasn't so independent. Most of my classmates had their hands held throughout the process. Few designed their own studies, some even had their thesis practically written for them.“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”

It sounds as if you need to enjoy bowing down to tha man a bit more, and talking crap at the dean is not likely to help.

I was forced to be independent because of the lack of help from my advisor and preceptor during my internship. I asked them many times for help and guidance and got nothing. My advisor completely failed at his duties for both my internship and thesis, and I will discuss this with the dean. I should not have been put in any of these situations. This thread is just for venting.“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”

Fine, but you sound like a big crybaby. Perhaps you expect too much.

Expecting them to do their jobs? When half of his complaints about my thesis were wrong and the other half were the failure of him not fulfilling his responsibilities? Internships are not supposed to have students thrown into the wild to fend for themselves. Advisors are actually required to guide the students to ensure that they are successful. Certainly bad things happen. It wasn't his fault that my preceptor was retarded, but he is responsible for a lot of other issues and ignoring my pleas for assistance and not even reading my proposals and drafts. This isn't a PhD program, and I would still expect more from one.“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”

I just double-checked one of his comments. It seems he wanted me to use an analysis that the very literature he gave me suggested shouldn't be used except in specific situations. Situations that require more than what can be accomplished over a summer internship. This type of analysis has also been criticized for being heavily abused by those who want their papers to look more scholarly than they actually are. So basically, he's complaining that I did my analysis correctly when he wanted me to BS it.“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”
