Steve Jobs on going Flash-free...

The very simple reality here isn't that Flash isn't a good technology, it's that Flash is another platform on top of iPhone OS. Steve Jobs wants to be the single gatekeeper for all iPhoneOS content so he can monetize it all. Apple gets a 30% share of all iPod/iPhone games right now -- if you distribute these games via Flash, they get 0% share of the revenue. This is about locking people in to Apple's monetized ecosystem, it's not about technical superiority.
Does anyone play Flash games? Seriously, who cares. Flash is about porn and Hulu, both of which will be on iPhone OS within the year.

Here's an example of the difference HW acceleration makes.

A couple weeks ago, Apple finally opened up APIs specifically for HW accelerated h264 decoding (something that's been on Windows for quite some time). Within the few weeks, Apple got a quick new version of Flash out that uses the h264 acceleration (Hulu doesn't work right now, not sure they use h264...but YouTube does).

        Check out the benchmarks: http://www.anandtech.com/show/3682/a...s-x-we-test-it

It's Apple standing in the way of fast Flash. That's why I hate the fact that Mac fans say "flash is so sloooowww" as a reason why it needs to die.

As I said, I don't care much for Flash...but I believe in the free market of technology. Let users choose which is best.

I use Chrome on Mac these days.

And look at what Windows used to be.

I'd much rather have a large consortium of competitors agree on some standards and let everyone use them fairly. This sounds like "better" competition to me.

I'm not even sure what you're arguing right now. Open standards are well and good, yes. But that doesn't mean there's no space for proprietary ones if people want them.

Look at OpenGL. Open standard. yay.

Too bad it sucks and virtually no games use it unless they have to. Why? There's better proprietary systems.

Technology needs to be evaluated own its merit, not on its dogma.

Proprietary systems lead to platform inertia, which in the end appears to stifle competition more.

If you think about it, Apple's rejection of Flash is a "proprietary" move. If the market follows, why not?

It's the old philosophical dilemma "the king's dead, long live the king" all over again.

Does not follow. You should take more philosophy courses to learn how to structure arguments.

Flash is just one of many web technologies. It doesn't stifle competition. Silverlight is a brand new entrant to the Flash-like market, and its marketshare increases in the past two years have been staggering.

Sure, read it as if I meant a highly successful proprietary format. Like how some companies are still stuck using IE6 for intranet apps.

Another major ****ing pissoff? Apple's talking about how they use "HTML5, CSS, and Javascript" because it's all nice and open, etc. Then they talk about how they do video.

What he doesn't mention is how Apple has specifically protested the inclusion of a royalty free, completely open video codec (Ogg Theora) being included as mandatory in the HTML5 video spec, so all browsers will support at least one codec. They not only protested it, they effectively threw a tantrum and demanded it be removed from the standards. Instead, they want to replace it with h264...which is proprietary standard which is currently royalty-free only by limited-time agreements...and eventually, every decoder for h264 content (eg, ever browser) will need to pay licensing fees to do it.

It should become increasingly apparent to everyone that Apple doesn't give a **** about openness. The only reason they've adopted some open source aspects (Webkit, Darwin, etc) is because it is economical to do so. Even then, they always tie it to something proprietary to stem its utility -- Darwin is totally useless without the proprietary APIs used in OS X, Webkit is a web browser which must support standards anyway (no competitive advantage here). It's all ****ing lip service, and people eat it up because they're retarded.

Agreed. Whenever Apple makes a move towards "openness", it appears to be accidental, like DRM-free iTMS. A broken clock...

DRM-free iTMS just means increased sales. Apple knew there was a glass ceiling on its growth with DRM on it. Not to mention pending anti-trust cases.

Everyone note the irony of someone saying "let the free market decide" throwing a hissy fit when Apple, by all accounts a participant in the free market, makes the ultimate free market move

Ultimate free market move = preventing competitors from competing?
