If I recall he holds the view that American is mostly a classical ethnicity (much like Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Benjamin Franklin and most Americans of the 18th, 19th and early 20th century) not something based on accepting the principles of the US constitution or gaining citizenship.
