Cheetahs are the smallest/lightest built of big cats, and yet they choke their prey first before eating it.

I guess hyenas don't need to choke their prey because they have such powerful jaws.

Because they can't just start eating it while it's alive like a hyena. Also, iirc, cheetahs hunt during the day when there's less competition.

So? With those kind of powerful jaws, it would be faster to kill the prey simply by crushing the windpipe rather than eat the prey alive.

Which also goes to CW's about being quicker before other predators come. Breaking the windpipe would be quicker - not eating the prey alive.

Although spotted hyenas act aggressively toward each other when feeding, they compete with each other mostly through speed of eating, rather than by fighting as lions do...

Once prey is caught, spotted hyenas will kill their prey by eating it alive.

Hyenas strong jaws are for crushing bone, might not have the structure to choke out. Anyway, eating alive is better because then they gain some of the nourishment no matter what. Plus it's harder to steal if it can still get up and run away.

Lions and hyenas hunt in the afternoon and night afaik. Leopards take their kills into trees.

Yeah, I know what leopards do with their kills. Just saying that in documentaries, they've hunted during the day.

Cheetahs avoid competition by hunting at different times of the day and by eating immediately after the kill.
