I think it's gooder to sound not as smart. That way no one bothers you for advice. Though I agree that pauses are useful. (Just not online... I took a nap there between "are" and "useful"... in real life I would have woken up and not had to think of how to finish that sentence... that's efficient communication.)

Who would this "everyone" be? I like his policies, and think he's a fantastic scripted speaker, but the man's no genius. He's a slightly above-average off-the-cuff speaker, but he's exceptional by no means.

Clinton, now THERE was a linguistic genius. But that has a lot to do with his womanizing abilities

The whole "um" thing always struck me as stupid. Everyone should intuitively know one looks more thoughtful if you pause with silence and give the appearance of thought. Covering it up with "um" is obvious and detrimental to image.

Above all things, never use "ask" as a noun. It's somehow become popular among middle and junior managers trying to project a "man of the people" stance by emulating football managers- people paid to shout at retards, not sound intelligent.

The quote in the op doesn't read that intelligent to me. It has mostly short sentences. These are easy to write. They don't even require a brain. FACT.

Um, to be fair, stamping that out is like a big ask.

I think "um", "like", "ya know" and "uh" to be about the same thing as profanity. Very rarely profanity is actually descriptive, usually it is just a place holder for someone who cannot think of the next word yet and does not want to break a solid stream of words.

This boy uses "um" a lot (and drives some people, um, mad) and still manages to sound intelligent.

A child has hardly had the time to refine their speech patterns and presentation skills, even an intelligent one. After a certain point in life (perhaps, adulthood?), intelligence should result in such things.

If someone posted about how dumb it is to sht one's pants, would you post a baby and claim "everyone thinks it is cute"?

ps. No, I'm not watching the stupid video.

Smart people intrinsically know what to read and when. I know when not to read.
