Most desktop LCD screens use CCFL. I think LEDs are occasionally pulsed for increased brightness but I am not certain. I think this technique is most often used on things like car blinkers and traffic lights and not displays. However I use this technique for my LED matrix screens in electronics class.
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

Go stare at a fluorescent light in your office for a couple hours and let me know if it strains your eyes, Wiggy.
Is this a joke? You might as well say 'go sit under a tanning lamp for a few hours and tell me how you feel.' Both use fluorescent technology after all.

I frequently complain of eyestrain. I have to take out my contacts and put on my glasses as soon as I get home, and I frequently need to take my glasses off and rub my eyes from LCD eyestrain.
You may be confusing eye strain with what is normal for ANYONE reading for a long period of time. Eyes cannot focus on text for as long as you do -- even if you were reading paper.

So do most displays. That's the 'F' in CCFL.

I honestly cannot believe this. You think sitting in front of an LCD will give you a tan? I can only assume you are intoxicated.

Try reading a book for 8-10 hours. You will have a headache even if it is the Bible, I swear to god. It is natural to not have to FOCUS YOUR EYES ON SOMETHING CLOSE TO THEM FOR LONG PERIODS. Do I really need to explain why this is evolutionarily and physiologically true?

I didn't say that. Staring at a tanning lamp will also give you eye strain.

Wiglaf, fluorescent lights have filters (phosphorous, specifically, I believe) that essentially turns the UV rays into the visible light spectrum. Tanning beds do not. So no, you will not ****ing get a tan from your LCD display but they do use the same general technology.

Good lord, the bible would give me a headache much faster.

Right. So if the manufacturer forgets the filter, you would get a tan. Why do I not believe you? If this were true every LCD manufacturer would have an option to ship the monitor without the filter.

Look, I read all day. I spend 4 hours each morning reading through The Hill and Politico's print edition. I have to take breaks even though that's ink. Does no one else experience this?

WTF dude. No one is going to accidentally forget the ****ing filter on your fluorescent lightbulb. It wouldn't work as a light very well either.

Why not? Have you ever been on a tanning bed? It is pretty bright?

Funny you call me retarded, but you do not read as much print materials as I do and that is your way of covering for it instead of disproving me with facts.,,

Personally I can roll out of bed in the morning and read until I reach the point of physical exhaustion, it doesn't bother my eyes at all. Then again I don't often read for more than a couple of hours on a daily basis.

Thank you guys for the on topic responses, and thank you Asher and Wiglaf for being yourselves.

I love the silence, because no one can explain why I am wrong. They just say 'WTF you dont know anything' and I exposed them.

But if you tried, you would probably have to "rub your eyes" like Asher does too.

Oh come on, Wiggy, we all have to rub one out sometimes.
