I was curious to know if anyone here has one, and what they think about it.

I was also wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to connect to the internet with it through a modem, as I am currently living in an area outside of their wireless coverage.

I have the Kindle DX. I like it, although it just sticks to doing one thing and does it well -- being a reader. It's a little heavier than I thought it would be. It has a web browser, but it's more like a technology demonstration than anything useful. The battery life is very long.

Don't know about your second question.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

      TECH FORUM TAKING IT :B:

NO YOU CANT DO ANY MODEM CONNECT. You can SYNC BOOKS TO IT VIA USB, though I would not recommend it at all BECAUSE AN IPAD COSTS THE SAME AMOUNT AS A DX AND IT CAN BROWSE PORN AND PLAY PLANTS VS ZOMBIE S

gah, you watch porn in public? Or do you use that ****ty screen for porn in the privacy of your own home?

Also you don't have to get a DX
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

You can SYNC BOOKS TO IT VIA USB,

By that I assume you mean downloading a book to a computer and transferring it to the kindle. Would that be right?

While true, you can't use an iPad in sunlight in any reasonable way, the fingerprints are annoying as ****, the battery life for reading is massively inferior to Kindle's, and the display is backlit LCD instead of eInk which puts strain on the eyes.

I wish you'd stop repeating that lie. Studies have shown NO eye strain increase. Seriously. You should know this since you live in front of leds/lcds and hockey television shows.

And let's not forget the Kindle is also annoying as ****. It's interface is torturous for scanning through books unless you go linear, page by page.

That's not proof. The "experts" they're talking to aren't even talking about the right things: it's not the refresh rate that caused eye strain, it's the backlighting. It's particularly egregious in situations where the screen is the brightest object in the room (late-night reading). And don't even think about reading an iPad near overhead lights, the glare kills it.

And yes, I sit infront of LCDs all day which is exactly why I know LCDs strain the eyes over long periods of time compared to ink and e-ink.

I dunno about actual medical effects but I will say that staring at a veritable flashlight for hours on end has never done anything particularly amazing for my eyes to say the least.

Let's play this game then girlfriends. How many hours do you estimate you spend looking at these LEDs/LCDs, which by the way are not flashlights? Then tell me how often you complain of eyestrain.

Like it lots. Particularly good for traveling, although they make you shut it down (close the cover) for take off and landing, which I guess I should have expected, but still annoys. I, of course, open it right back up when they move away. Then I grumble about making me turn of the Kindle but letting douchebag McGee take on six carry on bags so that my one had to be gate checked. Grrrr.

Pleasantly surprised at the battery life. The flash with page turns takes a little getting used to, but is eventually really not noticeable. Book selection is a little spotty.

They are flashlights. How do you think backlighting works?

You are staring at a grid of lights facing you, either LED or CCFL depending on how old the display is. They're pointed right at your eyes.

I frequently complain of eyestrain. I have to take out my contacts and put on my glasses as soon as I get home, and I frequently need to take my glasses off and rub my eyes from LCD eyestrain.

I don't know about actual eyestrain or fatigue, but e-ink is far more pleasing to read than LCD. Also, e-ink far far outperforms in sunlight. Read by the pool, read in the car, etc.

To be clear, LED-backlit displays cause less eyestrain the CCFL-backlit displays. CCFL backlighting, IIRC, works at like 20 KHz while LED backlighting is at least constant.

Go stare at a fluorescent light in your office for a couple hours and let me know if it strains your eyes, Wiggy.
