Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.

You talk like Ben, but he's smarter than you.

It isn't, unless you want to discuss mean IQ's being lower than the Western European norm. And recent history marred by crap politics and wars.

Like the nations of the former Yugoslavia.

Well some one seems a bit hostile. Their mean IQs are lower, this is a fact. Just like its a fact the mean IQ of Slovenian citizens is lower than the mean IQ of British citizens. The real debate is what this means. Is is nurture, bias, genetics or some mix of the three? This is where the science comes in. Various sides each with plausible arguments.

Also I'm not stopping you making a thread about Yugoslav history and present condition. I fail to see what's wrong with talking about problems the world or various regions face today and have in the past.

Why start a new thread? The issue of Balkan mental retardation fits neatly here.

I guess I was reading too much into your words then. My apologies.

Well I suppose its fair I provide figures from Lynn since I use him as a quick and dirty reference (I've disscused the shortcomings with Kitschum a few times, google it up for details) for these things.

From "IQ and the wealth of nations" (2002):

                  Ex-Yugoslavia
                  95 Slovenia
                  93 Macedonia
                  90 Croatia

                  Balkan non-Yugoslav
                  94 Romania
                  93 Bulgaria
                  93 Greece

                  For comparison:
                  107 Hong Kong
                  102 Austria
                  100 United Kingdom
                  97 Canada
                  93 Ireland
                  90 Turkey
                  83 Egpyt
                  72 Jamaica

Croatia and Slovenia are both rather developed countries. The relativley lower IQ for Slovenia vis a vis with Italy, Austria and even Hungary may be genetic in nature since Slovenia is a developed country according to the IMF and poverty or malnutrition aren't likley explanations. The effect of generations of brain drain or perhaps a less intelectual founding population?

The data for Croatia is probably flawed, it seems too low especially considering the many great contribution of Croatians to the arts and sciences (unlikley with such a low mean IQ and small population).

Data from "IQ and Global Inequality" (2006)

                  Ex-Yugoslavia

                  91 Macedonia
                  90 Croatia
                  90 Bosnia and Herzegovina

                  Balkan non-Yugoslav
                  96 Moldova
                  94 Romania
                  92 Bulgaria
                  92 Greece
                  90 Albania

                  For comparison:
                  108 Hong Kong
                  100 Austria
                  100 United Kingdom
                  92 Ireland
                  90 Mexico
                  90 Turkey
                  81 Egypt
                  71 Jamaica

Recently, a good friend of mine was mugged and had his wallet stolen by a gang of criminal Slovenian scum. I wish they would deport these people since they have no place in a civilized state like Texas.

Excuse me while I read my copy of Arthur de Gobineau's "Essay on the Inequality of the Human Races" and horsewhip my colored servants for slacking off.

Excerpts from teh wikipedia article on "IQ and the Wealth of Nations":

For 104 of the 185 nations, no studies were available. In those cases, the authors have used an estimated value by taking averages of the IQs of neighboring or comparable nations. For example, the authors arrived at a figure of 84 for El Salvador by averaging their calculations of 79 for Guatemala and 88 for Colombia.

                      ...

For People's Republic of China, the authors used a figure of 109.4 for Shanghai and adjusted it down by an arbitrary 6 points because they believed the average across China's rural areas was probably less than that in Shanghai. Another figure from a study done in Beijing was not adjusted downwards. Those two studies formed the resultant score for China (PRC).

                      ...

In some cases, the IQ of a country is estimated by averaging the IQs of countries that are not actually neighbors of the country in question. For example, Kyrgyzstan's IQ is estimated by averaging the IQs of Iran and Turkey, neither of which is close to Kyrgyzstan—China, which is a geographic neighbor, is not counted as such by Lynn and Vanhanen. This is presumably because the ethnic groups of the area speak Iranian and Turkic languages, but do not include Chinese.

                      ...

The figures were obtained by taking unweighted averages of different IQ tests. The number of studies is very limited; the IQ figure is based on one study in 34 nations, two studies in 30 nations. There were actual tests for IQ in 81 nations. In 104 of the world's nations there were no IQ studies at all and IQ was estimated based on IQ in surrounding nations.[4] The number of participants in each study was usually limited, often numbering under a few hundred. The exceptions to this were the United States and Japan, for which studies using more than several thousand participants are available.

                      ...

Studies that were averaged together often used different methods of IQ testing, different scales for IQ values and/or were done decades apart. IQ in children is different although correlated with IQ later in life and many of the studies tested only young children.

                      ...

There are also errors in the raw data presented by authors. The results from Vinko Buj's 1981 study of 21 European cities and the Ghanaian capital Accra used different scaling from Lynn and Vanhanen's. A comparison of the reported to actual data from only a single study found 5 errors in 19 reported IQ scores.

                      ...

As noted earlier, in many cases arbitrary adjustments were made by authors to account for the Flynn effect or when the authors thought that the studies were not representative of the ethnic or social composition of the nation.

One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.
