People are tired of federal intervention? Guess what? The South got there first.
Starting a bloody war over "attitude" is arguably even worse than slavery, and far dumber. And AFAICT people are "tired" of federal intervention only in matters that don't suit them personally. They're fine with federal funding for this and that, with medicare and social security. They'd prefer the Feds intervene more than they do now when it comes to illegal immigration, guns and abortion (which I hate too, but I'm talking consistency here). States' Rights somehow only seem to be in danger when things like gay marriage are involved...assuming the Federal government is trying to allow gay marriage and not opposing it, that is. I guess I would understand these fine nuances better if I'd studied constitutional law.

He does, but I don't think he did that particular time.

I think Oerdin can stand up for himself, but continually reporting posts is annoying and likely to lead to a the Oerdin who cried wolf scenario.

Well I guess even the GOV figured out that he could have gone about it better

A low-key proclamation marking April Confederate History Month sparked a firestorm of reaction after Gov. Bob McDonnell omitted slavery — leading him to issue an apology late Wednesday afternoon.

"The failure to include any reference to slavery was a mistake, and for that I apologize to any fellow Virginian who has been offended or disappointed," McDonnell said. "The abomination of slavery divided our nation, deprived people of their God-given inalienable rights and led to the Civil War. Slavery was an evil, vicious and inhumane practice which degraded human beings to property, and it has left a stain on the soul of this state and nation."

The proclamation had drawn both praise and fury. Its revision did not appease all critics.

"While I certainly applaud the governor for recognizing the need to go back and amend the proclamation, I still think that its original issuance has sent really a divisive message back out into the Commonwealth," said Edith G. White, president and CEO of the Urban League of Hampton Roads, which provides programs in education, health, housing and work-force development.

Rasheed N.C. Wyatt, president of the Newport News chapter of the NAACP said: "Although the Governor has issued an apology after the fire storm of public pressure, he still misses the point. Inserting language to a proclamation which is already offensive simply demonstrates how out of touch he is with the African American community. If he is truly contrite he would rescind his proclamation and move forward to addressing the issues of unemployment, real estate foreclosure, transportation and food on the table affecting many Virginians. At this time Virginians need Governor McDonnell to be pulling us together, and not apart."

The proclamation came at the request of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The organization was created in 1896 by Confederate veterans who wanted to carry on the memory of Confederate soldiers and sailors, according to the Virginia division's Web site, www.scvva.org.

"There's so much misinformation," said Brag Bowling, who is the organization's commander of the army of Northern Virginia. "Our schoolchildren are being taught things that didn't even happen."

The "misinformation" includes the reason Virginia entered the war. He said it was because President Abraham Lincoln called up troops to invade the lower South.

"The day he called the troops, Virginia was solidly pro-Union. That's why Virginia left the Union. It had nothing to do with slavery," Bowling said.

"What Gov. McDonnell has done is to promote education in the state. That's all he's doing, that and the need for tourism since the sesquicentennial is coming up," he said, referring to the 150th anniversary of the Civil War in 2011.

Harold Wilson, a history professor at Old Dominion University, said slavery "certainly wasn't the single, solitary factor influencing people to vote for secession."

There weren't enough slaveholding politicians in Virginia to call for secession. The non-slaveholders were also on board, he said. For them, states' rights were important, he said.

McDonnell said Wednesday that the purpose behind the proclamation was to draw attention to the upcoming 150th anniversary of the Civil War, which a state commission is preparing for.

"The Confederate History Month proclamation issued was solely intended to promote the study of our history, encourage tourism in our state in advance of the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War and recognize Virginia's unique role in the story of America," he said.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

Which he hasn't gotten around to doing yet.

Given that it has no practical outcome for anyone except to tick people off, it was a dumb move.

          • I love the position it couldn't have been about slaves as most southerners didn't own slaves.

You're not "solidly pro-union" if you think secession is okay.

I'm like 99% sure that you are wrong on this. Ben was calling Oerdin a racist. Regardless, I don't think its really a reportable offense.
