  • We just got a 6.9 earthquake

But it was down in Baja. We did get a fair amount of shaking here but I've looked around my house and no damage. Still, it's our biggest quake in years.

I'm expecting damage down in Mexico since so many of their buildings are made to low standards. Well, the big buildings are made to good standards but lots of people build their own homes using bricks which isn't a great idea in an earthquake zone.

A small after shock just happened. It was much smaller.

USGS said the after shock was a 3.0 so pretty small.

The USGS changed the rating to 7.2 and says the strongest after shock was 5.4. To compare the Haiti earthquake was a 7.0 so this was stronger then the earthquake in Haiti. There are some reports of a collapsed building in Calixico just north of Mexicali, BC which was the epicenter.

Are all these earthquakes connected somehow? Haiti, Chile, now this?

There was a split-second shaking, but nothing big where I was in LA. Friend was in a 12 story building downtown and felt it a lot much more. Crazy amount of aftershocks.

Naw, the one out here was just normal movement on the San Andres fault system. Baja and much of coastal California are on the Pacific plate which is moving north-northwest relative to the North America plate.

Oerdin, it seems like there are two stretches of heavy earthquake areas - calif, mexico, guatemala and peru, chile and a hole inbetween. Is this "hole" just because there are no news reports or is it actually more quiet (lots of small quakes instead of few but big) ?
