      Is it bad enough to need pain killers?

      I don't think they even do anything with broken toes. Generally.

          All you can really do is tape it and the next toe together. That's as far as I know. I'm not a doctor, so let me say, I THINK that's about all.

            Oh, if it is broken, it'll be bruised and swollen for quite some time. But the pain shouldn't keep getting worse; broken toes (even a severe stubbed toe on occasion) can, rarely, develop osteomyelitis, so be on the lookout for signs of infection.

            Buddy taping it to the next toe, as per Sloww's suggestion, wouldn't hurt either; it isn't as helpful as buddy taping fingers, due to the decreased movement of toes anyway, but it can't hurt.
