Ah, generally speaking, they didn't need to resort to terrorism. It's always been either straight-war jihad, which they used to do pretty well, or overlord dhimmi BS. Both of those worked reasonably well at achieving their goals of money/power/influence/whatever. It's their modern tactics which are moronic, and they direct them at folks more powerful than us for the most part.

Hate to say it, but we taught them this. Terror bombing goes back to reformation England, or Napoleonic France. It really caught on in the 18th century in Europe. Suicide bombs were used in a variety of communist insurgencies in this century. Heck, the VC used to even use little kids.

I noticed that also. It explains why there's so many gay men in Russia...

I thought that was because of Putin.

                  Symptom, not a cause.

Great, another reason for Russians to be afraid of women.

Independent Chechnya was one of al-qaeda's staunchest allies. Back in the day they competed with Taleabn / al-Qaeda controlled Afghanistan to see who could be the most repressive Islamist state. Like pre-2003 Afghanistan they persecuted non-muslims, made it a death penalty offence for non-muslims to be caught looking at a muslim woman, forced Christians to convert, and openly provided support to al-qaeda activities throughout the world. An independent Chechnya would become a safe haven from which al-qaeda could lash out at the world. If these guys weren't bombing Russia they'd be bombing the US.

As far as I've heard, Chechnya has gone through phases. At first, it was a fight with mostly secular Chechens. After a broad swath of military-aged men died, the Islamists began to hold sway. Now you see Chechens in Afghanistan and the like, engaging in a global struggle for the caliphate and all that AQ nonsense.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

If my hometown looked like Grozny did after the redecorating, I might consider Afghanistan an improvement too!

Seriously though, while I might have sympathized with Russia maintaining territorial integrity at the onset of this mess in the 90's, after all they inflicted on that region for no coherent purpose whatsoever, the Russians are not the good guys either. Not that that justifies bombing subways mind you.
