  • The Bionic Rabbit

Tomorrow morning I go in for the first of two cataract surgeries. A month from now, I'll have acrylic lenses in both eyes -- my first permanent artificial body parts.

The surgery is considered routine. In fact, it is the single most common surgery done in the US today, with a success rate over 99%. I've worn glasses since I was 6 (contacts since 19) -- that's 50 years. When all is complete, I should have uncorrected vision somewhere in the 20/20 to 20/40 range.

So, needless to say, I'm psyched.

I'll not be permitted to use my comp tomorrow. See you (more clearly!) on the other side...

    Good luck.

                Hope everything goes smoothly!

Question: how do the lenses cope with presbyopia?

Can I have your retinas if the operation fails?

If I come out a month from now with 20/20 vision unaided, it will feel like a superpower to me.

Zopper -- One can get presbyopia-correcting IOL (intra-ocular lens) implants. I'm going for monovision correction (in my case, right eye for distance, left eye for near vision), which is the type of correction I've had with my contacts the past several years. It's not for everyone (some get headaches etc), but has worked great for me. It slightly compromises depth perception, but eliminates the need for reading glasses. (Again, if all goes as planned...)

And yes, Ming, I should be back to normal activity after a day or so.

Thanks for the good wishes, everyone. I'm off to the hospital now...

The post-op eye patch. Not nearly as pirate-y as I'd expected.
But definitely a bit on the Borg-ish side!

Borg, yes. Pirate, no. Borgs are cool though.
