Just hyperbole.
But they are so incredibly useful these days. I use mine far more for its other functions than for the phone functions. It's amazingly convenient to carry a pocket sized MP3 player, mobile web browser, GPS/Sat Nav, games machine. Especially as I commute by train. I have plenty of (better) music devices.
I don't browse the web when I'm out (I have things to do).
I know where I am going so don't need GPS.

The best phones are pretty much as good as the best mp3 players. The iPhone is just an iPod with a phone built in... modern mobile gaming is where console gaming was a few years ago, and improving all the time.
It doesn't sound like it's for you, but modern phones are the stuff of science fiction when I was a kid. It's incredible what such a small package can do.
