I have one but I only use it for emergencies. It's in my briefcase turned off.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

Just out of interest Rah, how do you know to turn it on when someone needs to call you about an emergency?

It was better 20 years ago. It was impossible to contact people in case of emergency.

The only emergencies are mine.
I did keep my phone on near the end of my wife's pregnancy but that's about it.

I am absolutely stunned every time I hear "I can't survive without my cell phone".
Kids today.

But they are so incredibly useful these days. I use mine far more for its other functions than for the phone functions. It's amazingly convenient to carry a pocket sized MP3 player, mobile web browser, GPS/Sat Nav, games machine. Especially as I commute by train. I use mobile internet all the time and I never thought having access to sat nav would be as useful as it is to a non-driver.

I wouldn't have a phone at all (land line or cell) if it wasn't required for my job.
I have plenty of (better) music devices.
I don't browse the web when I'm out (I have things to do).
I know where I am going so don't need GPS.
Games on a phone? Be serious.

The best phones are pretty much as good as the best mp3 players. The iPhone is just an iPod with a phone built in... modern mobile gaming is where console gaming was a few years ago, and improving all the time.
It doesn't sound like it's for you, but modern phones are the stuff of science fiction when I was a kid. It's incredible what such a small package can do.
Of course we don't need them. We don't need a house, car, computer, electric lighting, refrigeration, washing machine... doesn't mean we shouldn't embrace how they can improve the quality of our lives.
