We can add rap music back to the texts when they stop pretending the inventor of penut butter is as important as the inventor of the light bulb.

Because there's no good reason to abandon the longtime standard for some bull**** PC equivalent. It would be like changing the name of "Thursday" to "4th Day" because you don't want to offend people who don't believe in Thor. Why should anyone care about that? They mean the same thing and "4th Day" is more inclusive!

I kinda feel the same about "marriage". Harping about the name is counter-productive. I'd rather have equal rights, if by an 'inferior' or 'segregated' name (Civil Unions), today and work out the semantics tomorrow. Ultimately, if there is any argument to the "marriage is a religious term" position, then separation of church and state should conclude civil unions for everyone and people can self-identify as married according to whatever personal, social, religious or insane standards they choose and under the authority of whatever cult endorses the term.

Really, I'd prefer if there was no state recognized (or endorsed through economic and medical law) standards to relationships. I must admit, I like that civil unions establish a precedent by which to abolish any religious or authoritarian designation/prejudice regarding relationships. In this regard, I like civil unions not only for equal rights considerations.

Despite yours and others feelings on the matter, marriage/family is the foundation of human social life and health.

When it is unimportant, the population becomes less healthy socially.

I'm more concerned about distortions of major historical events or issues. Such as Mexican War, Civil War, civil rights movement, American imperialism, and so on.

The definition and level of commitment to/of those words is personal, varies wildly and classic definitions are largely inconsequential to the continued existence of modern society. To claim that something "got us this far" is the same as to claim that Stalin is responsible for "progress" under his oppression.

The foundation of human health (economic, social, ecologic and spiritual) is certainly not the enforcement of authoritarian (and thus inherently abusive) personal relationships.

Investigate those societies which tried to move past marriage at some point. I use to think we should move past marriage too, but after a bit of study I realized that marriage is a fundamental human institution.

Additionally, the healthiest people now are also those married/etc.

There is a reason I support homosexual marriage. It isn't because I think marriage is a right.

Carver's influence is FAR more important than inventing peanut butter. His popularization of the crop helped the South immensely, especially since the cotton crop was devestated after the boil weevil ran rampant.

If it is indeed true, however, that text book publishers just print whatever Texas says to print, then this is concerning. The solution is probably what Dr. Strangelove suggests - get a coalition of New England states together with NY (or some other similar conglomeration) and out-weight Texas.

It's that whole unified school district thing. It's rather unlikely we could get five state school boards to cooperate. Better to have California do it. Since 10% of the American people live in that state, and it's significantly wealthier than Texas, it could be the behemoth needed to stop Texan domination of American education. Our kids wouldn't even have to learn about the Alamo anymore.

I'm still waiting for Patty to respond to this.

I'm not sure which would be worse - the fact that Patty was ignorant about Carver's more significant contributions to America, or that Patty did know about the other contributions but wanted to deliberately lie about Carver's role in our country's history with his dumb peanut butter remark.

California lets each school district decide on its own text books so the result is lots of small orders instead of one big one like in Texas.
