I have a Russian girlfriend (not the exclusive kind). Actually, she grew up in the Ukraine but a Soviet Port city where everyone was Russian. We did an MSc together in Sweden. I haven't seen her in a few months, but she is scheduled to visit me in Kenya this summer.

She's awesome. 30something, couple Master's Degrees, speaks with a thick Russian accent... I feel like I'm James Bond when she talks.

Also Tolstoy's short stories, Dostoevsky (C&P) and Pasternak (Zhivago).

Really? I thought piroshki and pirogi, despite the similar names, were very different foods. Isn't piroshki some food like a little bread ball with ground meat inside? Or am I thinking of something different?

Oh well. I like halushki too, provided it's well made. One local church's Russian festival tries to pawn you off with supermarket egg noodles with a few shreds of cabbage. For shame.

Well, what you call pirogi are always called vareniki in Russia, and pirogi are simply pies. Thet's why we go when someone mentions cooking their pirogi in boiling water.
Pirozhki are small closed pies, baked sweetish dough with sweet or savoury filling.

Pierogies in boiling water is a Polish thing. Or at least it is here in the US.

That doesn't take away how creepy and awesome that guy is at the same time.

                        My questions:
                        1) WHO IS HE LOOKING AT?
                        2) What's with the swagger?
                        3) Why does he look like a ventriloquist's dummy?
                        4) Was this a comedy act?

In a similar vein, this video is unbelievably awesome. From the same decade.

Italian artist speaking English gibberish. This video has subtitles.

I've recently read that Russia has had a modest increase in its population in the last year after such a long strech of demographic decline this is heartening.

It also appears from the data Muslims and Chinese won't demographically conquer Russia if immigration or birthrates don't rise.

I really really hope Russia rises to new heights in this decade. I need a place to emigrate to after Western Europe goes to the dogs.

@Russians on this forum: How would a Slavic, blond college educated early 20's guy be treated there? I'm pretty sure I could learn Russian pretty well by then, but am not sure if I could get rid of my accent.
Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.
The simple suggestion of a true change scandalizes and terrifies modern man. -Nicolás Gómez Dávila
