Figures that a few days after I formally accept a new position, I get a senior engineering recruiter from Google emailing me asking if I wanted to interview for a senior C++ dev position in Mountain View, CA. I've never, ever applied to Google so I politely asked how they got my email, as I'm kind of curious.

Would've been interesting, but I know the interview process with them is very long and I wouldn't be moving to California anyway. But I'm trying to hook up a couple of my friends with them now...

Turns out I was recommended to her by a former colleague now working at Google. Not as exciting as I had hoped.

The most unusual I remember was getting called out of the blue by a headhunter based in Singapore for a job based in Hong Kong. He called me on my number at an oil company that had not been published anywhere at that point (I gave my cell or my law firm number for everything). When I asked him how he got it he merely said that a personal contact had recommended me but would not reveal the name.
