I think the republicans would do well to abandon their social authoritarian platform and focus on economic liberalism (thus they would coincide more with the libertarian platform and, to a larger extent, my personal politics); however, Palin has been pretty affective in solidifying a "base" of fundie social authoritarians. This cannot be denied or ignored by writing her off as a "loon" or "stupid'. She has been affective, and I don't like it anymore than the next social liberal.

She provides a second front against Obama. The economic liberals (libertarians and republicans) are already bludgeoning Obama on spending and welfare ramifications. Adding a fundie social authoritarian group to oppose him on social fronts is rather nasty and impactful.

To pretend that she is a meaningless idiot is retarded.

Hmm, I think she lost that when Obama actually became president.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

I don't write her off, but there's no denying that she's a loon and not too bright. She just has an army of dumb loons with her. That army is not big enough to really dominate American politics AFAICT, merely big enough to prevent the Right from solidifying properly. They also make it harder to take conservatives seriously; there's something to be said for not spending more cash than we have, but when the primary proponents of an idea are a crowd of fools chucking teabags around and paying scads of money to hear the wisdom of mooselady...ehhh.

Not really. Obama hasn't been governing so much as campaigning.

Wow. A complete non sequitor. Why even post?

How much more solidified do you want them? After the wins in NJ, VA, and recently in MA I would have thought those claims would have been put to rest.

If you think there is something to what they are saying, how is it hard to take them seriously?

Usually they don't fall off the rails this quickly.

Because they act like manifest nutjobs. Also, I already believe that deficit spending ought to end (though I'm sure it won't). People who don't believe so might be convinced by a reasoned argument, but they won't be convinced by these boobs and their teabags. And knowing an argument is endorsed by raving madmen makes it a lot easier to dismiss: "Oh, I heard this before from those guys who love HockeyMom."

Yeah well, the previous 2 legislatures didn't even have rails.

I love Hockeymom. I love every wink. I want her badly.

She might even be able to make me believe in a sky wizard, I'd like to find out.

If they are going to strain to dismiss an arguement with ad hominems, how are they going to be convinced with a "reasoned" arguement?

God, you just can't make this stuff up.

                              1) Make a speech that mocks Obama for being dependent on a teleprompter.
                              2) Make your own cheat notes plainly visible to cameras.
                              3) Make your reading of said cheat notes plainly visible to onlookers.
                              4) ???
                              5) President!!!

                              Unbelievable!
