It is as if, when Canadians look south across the border they swell with pride, but when they look within they shrink back, seeing many problems and feeling uncertainty about the future.

One guess as to what his occupation is...

Of course, you have no way of knowing. Perhaps the "free" care to which you and he are entitled isn't all that great. Hmmm.
You've no way of knowing this either. You openly admit to not knowing much of anything about Canada's system, yet you think it's something you don't want.

That pretty much sums up the stupidity of Americans in dealing with health care reform. You guys can't be bothered to do research into equitable, functional health care systems because of your stupid pride.

Was this supposed to be a meaningful thread?

It has nothing to do with pride. My current health coverage has been perfectly adequate for everything from dental work and preventative care to broken bones to an emergency appendectomy. I'm not gonna fix what ain't broke.

I worked in the billing department of a fairly standard Massachusetts hospital hospitalist department, as a temp, and I remember asking my supervisor what would happen with the patient whose documents I was working on. There was no insurance listed, and no address (homeless). She told me that the hospital would just have to write it off as a loss. I thought, huh. Kind of screws the people who are able to afford an apartment, but not health insurance.

Studies have shown that doctors treat patients who lack insurance dismissively/poorly.

                    Either
                    1. The particular procedure is not available in the province at all so he would have to go elsewhere anyway

                    or

                    2. The queue for the surgery may be longer than he is willing to wait and he probably doesn't want the optics of jumpoing the queue in his home province.

In either case he is a very wealthy man so its no big deal for him to pay and yes I will acknowledge you can get some of the best healthcare in the world in the UNited States if you are rich enough. I don't think anyone disputes that.

A Canadian citizen getting major surgery that he won't have to pay for out-of-pocket is proof that the Canadian healthcare system doesn't work? Yes, I see it clearly now.

pretty sure he does pay out of pocket for anything he has done in the U.S.
