BEIJING, Jan 15 (Reuters) - A rising number of Chinese provinces are preparing to introduce power rationing as electricity supplies lag behind demand amid harsh winter weather, local media reported on Friday, citing Zhang Ping, head of the National Development and Reform Commission.

Power rationing in six provinces totalled 13.9 gigawatts (GW) as of Dec. 12, the China Business News reported, citing data from the commission.

The recent power shortages were most prominent in central China and power supplies would remain tight in the region as well as some provinces in northern China in the first quarter, the report said, citing forecasts from State Grid Corp of China, China's leading grid operator.

Coal stocks at major coal-fired power plants, which generate about 80 percent of China's power output, have been at 17-month lows in recent days as harsh weather, strained transportation, insufficient coal production and rising coal prices curbed stockpiling at power plants.

In addition to calls to coal and gas producers to ramp up production and shipments, Beijing was also encouraging increased coal and natural gas imports to counter power shortages across the country, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.[ID:nSGE60E026]

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

China should spin this as a greenhouse gas reduction plan.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

As I understand it, electricity generation is still one of those items that is under central control more or less.

I guess no one here is old enough to remember California's electrical energy crisis about 10 years ago.

Someone please inform Floyd that developing nations or third-world nations may not have the power generating capacity to keep up with increasing load, or money to buy power when they need it like the USA does.

These threads are ridiculously stupid. Only a complete and utter idiot would repeatedly make these threads and then assert it's all socialism's fault.

Looks like they have a bunch of government-owned companies doing power generation and distribution. It's identical to the situation we had recently (or still have) in North America. I know when Alberta first fully privatized electricity we had a bunch of issues including blackouts and lack of capacity...I guess I should've made Poly threads about it to illustrate why capitalism will always fail.

Can't speak for any other part of North America, but the vast majority of US electricity generation and distribution companies have never been government-owned. Just heavily regulated by the states.

What's the difference? The States control how much power they generate and how much they sell it for...the only difference is the profits go to private companies and not back to the government?

There is a difference in fact. As Adam Smith (RIP) was fond of pointing out from time to time, the latest research finds that an unregulated company is more efficient at providing goods and services than a regulated company, and a regulated company is more efficient than a government-owned company.

                        So efficiency in financials.

How about something relevant to the context of the thread, which is what I was going for...

You can't divorce the "financial efficiency" from the adequate provision of electricity generation. It just doesn't work that way.

Sure you can, especially in the context of comparing it to a state-run "communist" company.

Are there any statistics on that by the way?

Alberta's power cost went through the roof with de-regulation. Find it funny that a study that's supposedly reputable would claim the opposite.

Well they said it was simply more efficient. Government owned power companies may heavily subsidize costs, but that doesn't make them more efficient, per se.
