A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

To be fair, had a repug said this he would've been run out of town on a rail.

That's really the issue with Clinton and Reid's comments. More people (especially those of a conservative bent) would be willing to cut them some slack if Republicans hadn't been raked over the coals for similar statements in the past.

            • In Reid's case it seems to be "I made a mistake" and the dems are pointing to his record in support of minorities. If his past record was anything like Lott's* or republicans in general, he wouldn't have gotten support from Sharpton, et al.

*assuming Lott had an abysmal record wrt minorities and can't be arsed to double-check... it's just the internet ffs

So, as John Oliver said on The Daily Show tonight, Republicans can get away with saying dumb things about national security because everyone thinks they're good at national security and Democrats can say dumb things about blacks because everyone thinks they're good at blacks...

                  • Sort of, although it makes less sense when you remember that the Democrats were the party of segregation.

                    • Not really. Same people with the same attitude, just most of them jumped ship to the GOP when the northern dems brought minorities on board.

                      • Plenty of Dixiecrats stayed in the Democratic Party; Robert Byrd is the last Dixiecrat standing, after all. Once segregation was defeated, the conservative racists moved to the GOP and the liberal racists stayed with the Democrats...

Yeah - Lott celebrated the legacy of a virulent racist, and openly said that our country would have been better off had Thurmond won the presidential race in 1948. A spokesperson on one news show I saw even claimed that Lott was associated with "racially-charged" organizations.

Reid made a dumb mistake in his choice of words - he's definitely not a racist like Lott.
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

                              • It was just a poor choice of words. If Reid said Obama doesn't talk black, but can when he wants to, it'd be a-ok
