I think the cost is a major reason you want to get a job in some sort of actuary role. Do some even require a certain amount of experience?

JM: Passing/Taking the exam doesn't require a certain/specific degree though some jobs might. I've heard of ex-math teachers turning to actuary sciences after a long teaching career.

Yes, especially since I expect my employers would cover the exam fees.

They'll probably even pay for the time you spend sitting for the exam, studying for the exam, and then give you a fat bonus for passing it.

Find a job in the field NOW. Have them pay for all the materials, tests, and even time during your work day to study. AND the rewards they usually pay out for passing each test. And you might as well start the clock on experience in the field now. We had guys taking the tests at Allstate even if they had no plans on completing all of them, just for the perks.

            And Congrats.

Yeah, I agree with rah. Find an actuary job. Renege on your other offer once you get one. It's easier to call up the people at the job you accepted and tell them you're sorry than it is to explain to the actuary people why you're switching jobs and fields after only a year at work.

You have 6 months to graduation. Should be plenty of time to find something. I can see no benefit to you in starting the tech job if you can find an actuarial job in the meantime (assuming you actually want to be an actuary, and this isn't just a phase).

I told him that a page ago too. I wanted to make it more forceful.

Is the actuary exam stuff done? If so, why go work for Google if you want to become an actuary?

EDIT: oh, I thought you were taking the Google job

EDIT2: point still stands. why wait to start the job you want to have?

                      Is that Allstate's stand?

Yes, rah is obviously right. If only MtG were still around, I'm sure he's an expert in this matter.

Not 100% what you mean by that. I worked for Allstate for about 13 years but that was over 10 years ago. But back then any familiarity in the field was beneficial for your career regardless of your department. If you were a full associate your chances of progressing to upper management were GREATLY improved even if you were in a department like IT. So the company would pay for all the stuff and give the rewards regardless of your career path. They also did the same for the LOMA insurance exams which were considerably easier. I passed the first couple after about an hour of studying and got a 1k reward.
I can't believe that their stance on these types of things have change much since then.

Allstate's motto on the commercials is "That's our stand"

That was Asher's attempt at being funny... bazinga
