Wouldn't it be ironic that everyone getting all these shots allows the disease to develop a resistance to Tamiflu before it mutates into something really harmful...

Resistant strain discovered in Cardiff hospital, prompting concern among health officials

    First documented case in Europe!

It is likely that the only thing I will get from the shot is a sore arm for 3 days... ah well.

What the hell kind of sense does that make? Vaccine = Tamiflu?

Most seasonal flu strains are already Tamiflu-resistant; it's only a matter of time before most of the H1N1 virus picks up that gene. There are other antivirals that can be used in high-risk cases if such a situation arises.

I'm beginning to understand why you get your panties in such a twist when people bungle physics concepts.

Nope, merely showing my ignorance from a European perspective. The last I remember, governments around the World were stockpiling Tamiflu as the best defence against swine flu.

Now I see that there is an actually vaccine available from the end of October, which I got confused with Tamiflu.

My excuse is that I was on holiday basically most of October and some of November gallivanting across Europe, so didn't get the memo...

Yep, I made a mistake and I don't mind admitting it.

NOT getting it. Don't trust medicine that is rushed to the market based on mindless fear mongering.

                      Suit yourself.

I've known several people who've had it. No one's died or come close to it so it's a major inconvenience and not fun at all. I don't fear for my life of H1N1 but I hate being sick. H1N1 is the dominant flu strain this year, it's not as rare as you might think but it's certainly not as lethal as the media will have you think. In either case, it sucks. A guy who worked a couple cubes over was out for 2 weeks recovering from H1N1.

Which does change things as far as I’m concerned based on my previous faulty knowledge, as beforehand in the UK, people were getting hold of stocks of Tamiflu to dose themselves up unnecessarily without even having swine flu…

Now, whilst I doubt I’ll go out of my way to get the jab, if the opportunity presents itself, I will get vaccinated. In fact, I might make sure I actually do it before I go to Morocco next month as a precaution.

The only difference between the H1N1 vaccine and the seasonal flu vaccine is the strain of flu used to make it.

It's made by the same companies, using the same processes. It is as closely related to this year's seasonal flu vaccine as last year's seasonal flu vaccine is.

And again: between 60-70 million people have been vaccinated. Zero serious side effects.

I'm not saying you must get the vaccine, you can certainly choose not to, for a variety of reasons, including the fact that H1N1 is, for the majority of people, a mild illness. But please have a basic understanding of the facts first.

I'd just like to highlight this sentence as evidence as to why my wife is a writer, and I'm a doctor.

Holy ****, what a run-on. That's terrible. Thank god Galnemer doesn't come here, she'd beat my ass if she saw that.

I do ahve a basic understanding of flue vaccines.

I didn't mean to say I don't trust the vaccine itself. I don't want to support the entire mass hysteria behind it.

The can wake me up when there is a strain around killing 1 in 10. Then we should use Tamiflu and get vaccinated.
