Ozzy, the lives of 20,000, 200,000, or even 2,000,000 Iranians were irrelevant here. If it took killing all of them, that's what we should have done.
It all flows from there. I reject this, and I imagine most of the rest of you do to. I think (though I'm not sure) that a majority of Americans would also reject it. Though it might be close, which is a depressing thought.

I think you'd be suprised how that poll would go. I don't think it would even be close in the way you might want it. However even you have to admit that Carter acted more forcefully against a rabbit that attacked him, than he did with the Iranians who were holding Americans hostage.

Would it really have helped to solve the immediate prob (hostages) or is the usual call for military action often rather about "doing something" to feel better.

Because Libya didn't stop supporting terror just because Reagan ordered the bombing after La Belle. Well, maybe he wasn't genocidal enough in his ambitions (though I personally prefer it that way)...

Frankly, I haven't really read up on the incident. I have a basic understanding of what happened, but I'd have to read up on it before I passed judgment on Carter's actions (or inaction). I was a toddler at the time.

Is it your position that the Iranians released the hostages because they believed that Ronnie & Co. would blast the bejesus out of them?

Who sent the helicopter that ended up crashing in the desert? Reagan or Carter?

Reading up on what happened, it appears that Carter responded to the hostage situation with sanctions & asset freezing, in an attempt to pressure the Iranians while negotiating for the release of the hostages. He did, for a long time, refuse to attack.

When the negotiations failed, he did give the order, and the operations was bungled.

Reagan came in, agreed to unfreeze the assets (gave in to a demand) and got the hostages in return.

How is this a tale of how Carter was a wimp and Ronnie a tough guy, exactly?

Who mentioned Reagan? Keep your stawmen away from me. Were discussing the electorate's perception at the time that Carter was weak and enfeebled.

It isn't. It's just a tale of how Carter's a wimp. I'm not talking about Reagan.

Good thing it wasn't President Floyd. That guy, well, he would have had some cajones, and run an Iranian death toll into the tens of thousands if that's what it took to get the hostages back, and into the millions of that's what it took to punish the Iranians for killing the hostages.

My foreign policy would be rather similar to the following statement: "If it's a threat, it shouldn't exist. If it ****s with us, it should be punished. If neither of the above, we shouldn't care." If we'd adopted that policy immediately after WW2, the world would be a much better place
