  • The Conservative Bible Project

Liberal bias has become the single biggest distortion in modern Bible translations. There are three sources of errors in conveying biblical meaning are, in increasing amount:

*lack of precision in the original language, such as terms underdeveloped to convey new concepts introduced by Christ
*lack of precision in modern language
*translation bias in converting the original language to the modern one.

Experts in ancient languages are helpful in reducing the first type of error above, which is a vanishing source of error as scholarship advances understanding. English language linguists are helpful in reducing the second type of error, which also decreases due to an increasing vocabulary. But the third -- and largest -- source of translation error requires conservative principles to reduce and eliminate.

As of 2009, there is no fully conservative translation of the Bible which satisfies the following ten guidelines:

    1. Framework against Liberal Bias: providing a strong framework that enables a thought-for-thought translation without corruption by liberal bias

    2. Not Emasculated: avoiding unisex, "gender inclusive" language, and other modern emasculation of Christianity

    3. Not Dumbed Down: not dumbing down the reading level, or diluting the intellectual force and logic of Christianity; the NIV is written at only the 7th grade level

    4. Utilize Powerful Conservative Terms: using powerful new conservative terms as they develop; defective translations use the word "comrade" three times as often as "volunteer"; similarly, updating words which have a change in meaning, such as "word", "peace", and "miracle".

    5. Combat Harmful Addiction: combating addiction by using modern terms for it, such as "gamble" rather than "cast lots"; using modern political terms, such as "register" rather than "enroll" for the census

    6. Accept the Logic of Hell: applying logic with its full force and effect, as in not denying or downplaying the very real existence of Hell or the Devil.

    7. Express Free Market Parables; explaining the numerous economic parables with their full free-market meaning

    8. Exclude Later-Inserted Liberal Passages: excluding the later-inserted liberal passages that are not authentic, such as the adulteress story

    9. Credit Open-Mindedness of Disciples: crediting open-mindedness, often found in youngsters like the eyewitnesses Mark and John, the authors of two of the Gospels

    10. Prefer Conciseness over Liberal Wordiness: preferring conciseness to the liberal style of high word-to-substance ratio; avoid compound negatives and unnecessary ambiguities; prefer concise, consistent use of the word "Lord" rather than "Jehovah" or "Yahweh" or "Lord God."

    Wow. I mean, wow.

I'm a conservative Christian because I believe in the Bible. Liberals are evil because I'm a conservative. Liberal parts of the Bible must be wrong because liberals are evil. I'm a conservative Christian because liberal parts of the Bible are wrong.

I'm so glad we have reached the point when religious nonsense can be ridiculed along with other unsupportable hogwash.

The tide is definitely turning. I read an article in a national paper on the weekend about the closing of churches across this country due to the dwindling number of parishioners. Young people aren't going and there aren't enough older members left to pay the bills. It was an encouraging article.

I was under the impression than the 18-19th century was much more anti clerical and more virulent against religion than our times?

No doubt there were anti-religion crusaders in earlier times but the movement has gone mainstream now.

Closer to home, experts say Quebec -- where the Catholic Church once called the shots in public and private life -- stands to lose about half of its 2,000 churches by 2016.

                      Cronos -

The numbers show that Canadians have been fleeing the church for decades. In the mid-1940s, about 67% of adult Canadians attended church weekly.

By 1985, the number had plunged to 30%. In 2005, the number hit 20%. In 2006, a Canwest News Service poll found that 17% of Canadians attend church at least once a week, even though about half of those surveyed said they believe in God.

More worrying for churches is the number of young Canadians who are turning their back. In a sweeping study last year by renowned Canadian sociologist Reg Bibby, 47% of the teenagers surveyed said they never go to church. Another 20% said they "hardly ever go," while 21% said they go weekly.

Christianity isn't dying, or even hurting. It is dropping as a fraction of the total populace. This is largely because of the population of first world countries isn't growing, although it is true that first world countries aren't as strongly Christian as they use to be.

But there is still over 2b Christians, making it the largest world relgion having over 30% of the earth's populace being members.

Christianity is growing at about the rate of population growth in the world, while Islam is growing at faster than the world population growth rate.

Note that a majority of the high numbers that are claimed to be atheist come from old communist nations statistics which have been proven wrong when they allowed their populace freedom of conscience. So it is expected that reported numbers of atheists in the last decade are actually lower than reported statistics from 40 years ago.

The idea that world is becoming atheist is just not true, there is no evidence for it. Same with Christianity dying.

The form of Christianity is changing a bit, like it has in the past. The popularity of the Evangelical right wing Christians has dropped in the last decade, which I would expect due their involvement with politics and the Republicans. It never does religion any good to be involved in politics, this is why I think that Christianity in Europe is relatively weak.

Some of it is a change of religious practice.

According to http://www.adherents.com/largecom/com_atheist.html Canada is rather high at 20-30% nonbeleivers, but that isn't really all that strange.

                            Definitely not an atheist revolution.
