Until spring of this year, I worked in the largest courthouse in the world:

As buildings go, it wasn't bad.

Still, I'd sit a my desk and dream of tropical isles.

But the problem is, our upper management is demon spawn. And the worst of the lot is the head of IT. I wouldn't advise a tech to go anywhere near there.

I work in a typical downtown lawyer's office building. ~ 10 storys. The building's pretty nice, but the interior of our offices is ready for an upgrade. Class A. The only small complaint I have is that my office doesn't have a window (some offices are sweet and overlook the park outside). But it has a door and plenty of room.

            All-in-all I think I have a relatively good setup.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I work in a decent modern building. 70% of the building was built in 1993 I believe, but the part I work in ("The basement") was finished December 2007
Too much lifeless white color though... I don't like white walls

While we call it "The basement" it does have two big windows in the room I'm working in and just outside the windows is the parking lot (at the same level as "The basement")
I have the back against the windows and plenty of space and 6 people in the big room
The other people in the company are not that lucky though as they have less space per worker and most people can't look out the window
This space is empty... or is it?

but it has a jacuzzi, and a waterfall going into the inground pool.

i work in an hundred-fifty year old building that wasn't in its wildest dreams purpose built to be a restaurant/bar. the kitchen is maybe eight feet wide by about sixteen feet. two people have a difficult time working together, especially if we have to cross each other's path frequently (which we do). the beer and meat coolers are in the basement (down a flight of rickety stairs) and our walk-in cooler is upstairs (up a flight of even ricketier stairs). the building has a perceptible lean to it as evidenced by our dry smoker and prep table.
I wasn't born with enough middle fingers.

Our firm purchased an old two story brick house and converted it to office space. My office is on the second floor in what used to be a bedroom.

I spend very little time there however as I am in court most days and liable to be working from home when I'm not. My next "office" day will be Friday.

I have a windowless office, but it is large with its own confrence table and some stand up lockers for rain jackets/uniforms/work out clothes. I am also across the hall and two doors down from the gym and weight room.

More importantly, I am 100 yards away from the nearest fellow officer and 200 yards away from my boss. They don't bother me.

I'm struck by how many people reported that they work in windowless offices. That is a profoundly inhumane setup in my opinion, regardless of how well equipped the office is. Especially if the lights are fluorescent and blinking

In fact I read somewhere (Peopleware?) that in Denmark the law mandates that all workplaces have to have access to natural light.

Adagio, aren't you from Denmark? Can you confirm or deny this?

I have never heard about that law, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a law like that

Just an extra note to my workplace: While about half the people can't look out the window from their computer, there's plenty of natural light in the rooms (big windows on all walls), so even when there's no lights turned on there's plenty of natural light... well... during the day anyway
I might have made it sound a bit worse than it actually is, the people who can't look out the window from the computer only has to walk ~10-15 meters before they can look out the windows

But then, there's nothing interesting to look at, unless you like to watch trucks with trailers drive around the truck/trailer parking lot
This space is empty... or is it?

I work in a building more reminiscent of this, only with more police cars and a small cell block. That, or in the inside of an Impala or Crown Vic.
