  • Someone Stole My Identity

Why would they do that? Don't they know who I am? Why would you want to be me?

Well, really they stole my wives debit card and charged $800 bucks to Babies R US which took the monies right out of our account. Bank told me I would have to wait until the charge cleared to file fraud which will then take 10 days for me to get my money back. Babies R Us told me to fill out a police report for identity theft and to have the police fax it to them. Luckily my county is pretty small and the cops didn't have much to do. Though they did not like being told by Babies R Us to fax them a police report, but the cop said he would after calling the customer services line themselves.

In the meantime, wifey was calling Babies R Us and yelling at them to cancel the order and credit us back our money. They said they couldn't do that. So, she asked them where they sent the stuff she obviously didn't order, and they wouldn't tell her that. They did ask her for our phone number, which didn't match any of ours. But, they eventually told my wife that they couldn't do anything else until they had the police report, she still laid into them and they hung up on her.

Basically, Babies R Us will eventually get stuck with the loss. Which makes me wonder why they don't debit your account before they deliver with the debit clearing when the delivery is made. That way, if it is fraudulent it gives the real money holder time to react. That would make sense to me.

Anyway, $0 balance on credit card and an ING emergency fund will cover us for the next 10-15 days. Still, it's pretty annoying that people get away with this.

How soon after the card was stolen was the charge racked. And what was the timing on your informing the bank that the card was stolen.

Sorry to hear about the screw and I hope it is resolved as quickly as possible.

They are of the position your wife made the order (until they see evidence to the contrary) yet they won't tell the purchaser the address used for delivery?

      Thats ****ed up.

Well in all fairness, she was on the phone with them, so they probably hadn't verified her identity yet. I'm sure once they see a Police report that they will cooperate fully.

Card wasn't stolen, we still have it. We noticed a couple of $1 charges pending last week for places we never went to, and informed the bank. The charges never cleared and the bank said it's probably just a glitch in those companies software, both were internet companies. Then this morning the $800 was posted to clear and we informed them right away.

That's my thinking. I think since some of the information they have doesn't line up with our actual information they'll eventually give us our money back. I just talked to the bank myself, since wifey gets irate with them and cries and yells. I'm thinking it might be easier to deal with Babies R Us through the police than with the bank. Though I will do both.

My understanding is that they have been alerted by someone claiming the purchase was fraudulently made in their name. Baby Place is currently of the position Mrs. Japher did actually make the purchase but is open to evidence to the contrary. They accept that Mrs. Japher is Mrs. Japher.

Therefore when Mrs. Japher asks where her product was sent, they should tell her. Baby Place is sucking and blowing at the same time.

Yeah, but she did ask after she reported that she didn't make the order and wass claiming fraud. Wifey believes that it was delivered somewhere around here, so she was going to get it. It would be good policy not to give wifey that information, for the sake of whoever the thief is.

I think it might be a good chance that it was from around here. Someone at a restaurant who copied the information (number, address, and 3 digit code). She also left her wallet at Target or somewhere one day and got it back with everything still there. Probably should have canceled the stuff anyway.

I'll be taking these Huggies and whatever cash you got.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

That is what I did when I left my credit card at the bar. There was a thing on the next day, I complained and the credit card company took care of it and that card was cancelled (they gave me a new one).

Credit cards are easy like that, banks make it harder and will keep your money; cc's have to collect.

So, I'd rather deal with Toy's R Us, who is more likely to quickly return the money than the bank, who sees themselves as a middle man.

Lucky for me the Union Township police had nothing else to do today.

My company supply Toysaurus, and they're pretty decent most of the time (except lately ), so I think they'll refund the money. Besides, from my knowledge of our card sales, it'll be the credit card company who foots the bill ultimately. Understandably, as such a large company, TRU will have a heck of a lot of dodgy card transactions, and won't want to bother the card companies/banks with another, but it's their problem at the end of the day, and so TRU won't be too bothered about accepting a transaction that may be fraudulent becuase they won't foot the bill. If they have the delivery address then that will be a huge bonus in finding the fraudster, and they won't refuse it to the card company, even if they do to your wife. Frankly, it's none of her business who is trying to commit fraud with her card, because the card company will cover it, and the card company will send in the police "on her behalf".

Bank of America gave us our money back immediately when we were robbed, but told us if the charges later turned out to be valid, they'd deduct the money again.
