The US has hosted the modern Olympics FOUR times (not including Winter Olympics)! The nearest any other country has come to hosting is twice - including Greece itself.

Gee, I point out that Europe has almost 40% of the vote is what I thought was unfair and probably should be changed in the modern world to reflect reality. The possible anti-american is just one aspect and if you think that played 0%, you're a bigger idiot than even I thought.

If you had bothered reading you would have seen that I said I really didn't care that Chicago didn't get it.

But then, facts would just screw up your rants.

      • In any event, I think Rio will put on a great games. Brazil has come a long way in the last decade.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

        • I agree that RIO will do well since the country is backing the bid.

In the US, it's the city that is the host not the country. There is no way Chicago could have spent the money that China did.

And now I don't have to move for a month.

Ah, the real source of the whining - I bet you were hoping to make an easy buck renting your place out...
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

            • I was hoping to get a profitable vacation (and maybe some freelance work) out of a Chicago bid. Beyond that, I had no horse in that race.

              • I lived in LA in '84, dont know the financial pros and cons but my friend used the Olympics to kick start his business. Many people started up businesses thx to the Olympics...

Somehow I think this event might have had more effect on Chicago's chances than Europe having more weight than you think they should:

Yep, a costly loss. That was big topic of conversation around here. But in all honesty, I don't think I'd want strangers staying in my house. Seems kind of creepy. Is the extra money worth that creepy feeling?

                    • And actually I believe that the feuding between the US Olympic committee and the IOC probably had the most impact. But I don't think you can totally discount anti-american feelings as playing a small role.

I doubt the Fenger HS story got much worldwide coverage.
                      Did you hear otherwise?

When I was a kid I spent a summer at my grandma's who lived less than a block from there.
