Not quite the same situation, but it would be difficult to be a member of the KKK and hold a DoD/NSA security clearance.
Just out of curiousity, would being a Freemason adversely affect a TS clearance review? I have no personal interest whatsoever, honest (); it just occurred to me that, hypothetically speaking, the potential for conflicting loyalties might raise an eyebrow to some investigators.
Well yeah, there's wild speculation in every direction on that point. I'm fairly sure they're not interested in overthrowing or undermining the U.S. government anytime soon, but there might be a concern that perhaps some member somewhere would have a strong interest in sensitive information to which some other member somewhere might have access. I'm just thinking of the stereotypical "you scratch my back I'll scratch yours" angle, nothing more.

You could say that from many different group of people.
From my point of view, any group (philosophical, religious, political, cultural, sportive,...) may have the desire to influence political decisions, or may even want to get power, no problem with that; what is the key is that they should not undermine democracy, or have as political agenda something against democracy.
A police officer is one of the defenders of democracy. A cop that would be part of a anti-democratic group is not acceptable.
I do not know the agenda of the BNP, but if there is anything against democratic principles, then indeed, the police officer should make his choice: defender or offender of democracy.
