He had the misfortune of living too long.
Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. We are evil men in the gardens of paradise, sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. I'm surprised you didn't know that. --Saul Tigh

Drake is a dick. Ted Kennedy is responsible for inventing medicare, for several minimum wage acts, for legislation to make employers pay for the medical bills of employees injured on the job, many reforms which prevent health insurance companies from simply dropping coverage for people who got sick but who had paid all their dues, Ted Kennedy invented the Cobra which allows people to continue having health insurance after they have lost their job, he pushed for labor's right to unionize, he was one of the first backers of civil rights to insure black people had the same rights as white people, he was one of the first senators to push for allowing black people equal access to all public establishments (most of whom, in the south, refused to serve blacks or forced blacks to enter via the back door so that white patrons could not see them), in fact the man did so much Drake's attack on him is disgusting and unfair.
You're absolutely right. Drake's attack on him is disgusting and unfair. If someone actually did all the **** you claim Teddy did, he deserves far worse.

In related news, he's in my death poll. I'm waiting for an update, but if no one else had him that might put me in the lead! I got 2 Kennedy's in one year, let's see if any more Democrats on my list kick the bucket...

He's dead. He did some good things (if you're a liberal, anyway) and clearly did one very bad thing. Do the good things (which only count if you agree they're good, right?) redeem the bad? I don't know. What I also don't know is why we (or our media, at least) react the way we (they) do when somebody like this dies.

Have we, at long last, no dignity?

edit: to be clear, I'm not whining about people hating on Teddy Kennedy. I'm whining about people making huge big deals out of politicians and celebs dying (or living, for that mater, I suppose).

I'm not going to opine on whether his public accomplishments redeem his personal behavior.

But I do think that he was a legislative giant, helping as dysfunctional an institution as the US Senate occasionally work for marginalized members of our society. And the Senate is a worse place for his absence. That said, the celebrity-driven nature of our media is pretty irritating.

To be fair, Kennedy dying is a huge deal. The Democrats are down a Senator until MA can hold a special election.

Not necessarily. If the MA legislature passes a bill to allow the Guv to fill the vacancy until the special election as Kennedy requested (similar to the law in TX), the seat would only be vacant for another month or so. Health care still has to get out of Finance, which won't happen at the earliest until 9/15. So pivotal votes probably won't be scheduled during the vacancy (and if Kennedy were merely dying instead of dead, he wouldn't have made it for routine votes).

Yeah, funny how that law was put on the books to keep a repug gov from appointing someone but now that there's a dem gov they want to change the law back.

Another pathetic move by the dems.

Meh. The Republicans can still try to win the special election. Nothing is going to change about that. Leaving the seat vacant for five months would be a ridiculous concession to the Republicans. But it was stupid for the Dems to create a law that forces such a long vacancy in the first place.

Succession law for Senate seats is one of the few things TX has gotten right. Allow the vacancy to be immediately filled by someone (be it the Guv, legislative leaders, etc.), and couple that with a quick special election. Every state should have this law.

It wasn't stupid to them at the time. They really didn't care about the citizens of the state, they were more concerned about their own power. Politics at it's best (or worst) depending how you look at it. They still don't care.

I think it would be a suitable memorial to Kennedy if they left the law he fought for in place.

I doubt it. Allowing Romney to potentially clear the Republican field (which is all that a couple months of incumbency for a MA Republican Senator gets you) wouldn't have been a major concession. This looks more like stupidity than malevolence.

And using "it was one of Kennedy's final wishes" as an excuse was pretty hilarious when I heard it on the news.
