Yes, a young woman died. No, his life cannot hope to be summed up by that one moment. :anger:
If you read the accounts from those close to him, it wasn't that one moment that I have a problem with, it's what he did over the next few days. That wasn't spur of the moment, that was premeditated and planned and the true test of his character. Which he obviously failed. Also accounts of some of his activities later in life showed that he didn't really learn from his earlier mistakes.
And since I'm not a liberal, his legislative history didn't impress me either

Most people who have a "single moment of cowardice" similar to his have their life summarized for them by a court of law and a lengthy prison sentance.

Regardless of my undisguised opposition to Kennedy and a number of his positions, it can be stated he did at least attempt to work across the aisle (unlike the party today).

He did have moments of kindness without reservation like the time he helped this frantic mother with an 8 year old little girl at the airport. The mother was trying to get on a very small specail transit airplane with the child in the pooring rain on their way to meet her husband/father overseas.

As they ran for the plane the child saw the propellers and instantly froze in fear and began balking and freaking out while the mother is desperatly trying to get the child to move while getting soaked. The child is hysterical and not having it when a man behind the mother bends down tells the child everything's alright and picks her up and carries her to the plane. He assist the mother in getting her into the seat says his goodbyes and takes his seat. The mother sits there in stunned silence and when questioned by her daughter she turns and says "don't you know who that is sweetie? That's Senator Ted Kennedy."

While at the time I didn't register just exactly who he was I knew he was important because I'd never seen my mom act like that and that memory has stuck with me through the years of that rainy night and being picked up by this strange man who wasn't daddy. Would have been nice if I had the presence of mind to click on who he was.

Or maybe he was just tired of waiting and getting wet while the kid threw a temper tantrum and said fu*k it! Grab the kid and get on the plane! Yeah, I like that theory better

Something tells me if some random stranger in a public place walked up and grabbed a kid the scene would unfold a little differently. Times have changed.

One of his accomplishments that has withstood the test of time.

In Kennedy's mind, all of these achievements paled next to his long-deferred dream of national health insurance. When President Nixon proposed a plan for universal coverage that would have delighted Democrats in later years, Kennedy, who long backed a government plan, led the opposition, a move he later regretted. So he moved to partial reforms, but even here he was often disappointed. His hopes of a major restructuring were dashed in the early 1990s with the defeat of Bill and Hillary Clinton's health-care initiative.

The interesting things I've read this past day is how so many of the old time Republicans, and Nancy Reagan, told of the friendship and kindness that they had with Senator Kennedy. It seems in these days of yelling and screaming that we don't see that collegialty on the Senate floor among members of the rival parties these days.

Well it did keep him from seeking higher office.

He seeked higher office but it's harder to sucker the whole country so he was unsuccessful.
