Uhm, it's rather likely the whole Christ thing was made up, so let's not quibble about which parts are forgeries. The whole religion is a forgery. Within the religion, however, that section is gospel/cannon (literally). In other words, it's not optional to be a Christian and not believe it. Slowwy isn't without sin, but he's sure happy to be casting stones.

This is nothing to do with rights and wrongs of execution. It has to do with the rights and wrongs of a lynch mob. If the woman was killed, it would have been a lynch mob killing which Jesus could not accept or condone. The sin Jesus refers to here is the sin of murder which they were planning to commit to kill this woman and involve Jesus in it.
The only authority that could legally execute a person at this time was the Roman authorities and any execution without them would have been a lynch mob killing, ie murder.
As the mosaic law and the command given to Noah and his descendants allowed execution of murderers etc, these executions could only be carried out by sinful people as all people have sinned. The problem with the case of adultery was that the very act of execution involved another sin murder. Jesus was saying in effect 'if you can kill her without sinning, go ahead', as they could not they all left.

Correct to a point. But they had no authority to execute a person, all executions had to be refered to the Roman authority, either Pilate or Herod. That is why they referred Jesus to Pilate for crucifixion. In the case of adultery it is apparent that it was not referred to the Roman authority which means it was a lynch mob killing, not a legal execution. Roman law probably did not allow punishment for adultery anyway, or was not enforced, seeing Herod was in an adulterous relationship himself. John the baptist was imprisoned and beheaded for condemning Herod's adultery.
