Drones do look nice, I wonder how long before we get the first remote controled air superiority fighters?

          Conflicting reports.

ISLAMABAD - A Taliban spokesman and a deputy to Baitullah Mehsud claimed Saturday that the Pakistani Taliban chief was not killed by a CIA missile strike, contradicting another aide who confirmed Mehsud's death a day earlier.

The claims, made in calls to Pakistani and international media organizations, could undermine the growing confidence among U.S. and Pakistani officials that Mehsud died. They also could be tactical manoeuvres to prevent defections as the Taliban leadership searches for a successor to Mehsud or even to delay a decision on naming an heir.

Pakistani intelligence officials acknowledged Saturday that the missile strike said to have killed the Taliban chief was carried out with Islamabad's help, indicating growing co-ordination between the two countries despite Pakistan's official disapproval of the strikes.

Mehsud deputy, Hakimullah, and Taliban spokesman Maulvi Umar each called two separate Associated Press reporters Saturday to say that Mehsud was alive. They pledged evidence of his continued existence would be brought forth in the coming days.

Could they be lying? Absolutely, but it's not like the US government is a bastion of reliable information...

            Chaotic.

ISLAMABAD, Aug 8 - The Pakistani government has received reports that shooting broke out between two rivals for the leadership of the Pakistani Taliban, the interior minister said on Saturday.

”The infighting was between Wali-ur-Rehman and Hakimullah Mehsud,” Interior Minister Rehman Malik told Reuters. ”We have information that one of them has been killed. Who was killed we will be able to say later after confirming.”

Pakistani news channels were carrying unconfirmed reports that Hakimullah Mehsud had been killed at the meeting to decide who would succeed slain leader Baitullah Mehsud in Waziristan, a northwest tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

A fellow commander in the Pakistani Taliban insisted that Baitullah Mehsud, the movement’s leader, was alive, the BBC reported on Saturday, rejecting government claims he had been eliminated in a US drone strike.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

CIA should release a few fake news reports that have a bunch of top taliban guys each claiming full leadership and threatening other top guys. See how many of them we can get to kill each other. After a few weeks, send the Pakistanis in to mop up.

IIRC, Drake has also argued that drone attacks also support the propaganda of the Taliban of the faceless American.

How does this strike change the calculus by which myself and others have decided that drone strikes in Pakistan aren't worth the risk? The possibility that some high-level AQ/Taliban leaders would be killed by drones that wouldn't otherwise be eliminated has already been weighed against the possibility that drone strikes will inflame public opinion in Pakistan and speed the creeping Islamization of that country. Mehsud is a big fish and killing him will definitely hamper AQ/Taliban operations for a while, but it's not going to end the fight in Afghanistan and will seem a small comfort if Pakistan goes Islamist in the future.

This idea has some merit. It kills me to say so, but it does.
