The 2000 Census is generally regarded as a bad one. The GOP did everything they could to sabotage it. The one coming up should be considerably more accurate. Although, in general, there is very little difference between the GOP and the Dems, on science, the Dems are a lot better.

The GOP led Congress forbade the Census from using modern statistical methods, and required them to only count those who responded to forms. They didn't provide enough money for the Census to accurately count minority populations in the U.S. either.

The effect of this is both political and economic, as it means white areas, which are more likely to lean GOP get more political representation. It means that government monies which are allocated based on population are weighted towards white areas.

Could you please be more specific as to what "modern statistical methods" were forbidden?

Also, the Lebanese community in and around Detroit is actually fairly well-established compared to most other minority groups. Much of the community has roots there dating back 100 years. These aren't Guatemalans who are on the run from the INS. They have homes and documented jobs. Most are American citizens.

"Sampling" describes EVERY evidence-based statistical method. It's like saying that scientists aren't allowed to use experiments.
