The post I responded to (and that it responded to) was about deficits.

Actually, this entire thread has become nothing but an enormous *****fest against the Dems. Drake at least has salient points but is ignoring the big picture. DD is just yapping cluelessly behind him. HC, a poor DL. Ramo. . .sorry.

The bill is bad, but it isn't as horrible as some here would like you to believe. This is why the big sticking issue is the deficit, which should be a concern but not as big of one as played out here or in Washington. We need healthcare reform a lot more than we needed Bush tax cuts or two wars in the middle east. If you believe that the bill will mean the end of America, you are a mellow dramatic baby.

              • Dems ditch 'deem and pass'

Top Democrats confirmed Saturday that the House would hold separate votes on the Senate healthcare bill and the reconciliation bill, making fixes to it.

Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), one of the chief deputy whips, Rep. Melvin Watt (D-N.C.), and Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), all of whom said that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) won't use the tactic of deem and pass for healthcare reform.

The move effectively kills the "deem and pass" strategy Democrats had been eyeing to make changes to the Senate bill through a rule on the bill, which at the same time would have deemed the original Senate healthcare bill to have passed the House.

The House appears set now to move toward an up-or-down vote on the Senate healthcare bill, as well as a separate, up-or-down vote on the series of changes to that bill. There will still be a vote on the rule, as there always is for a piece of legislation, though it will not package the two bills together.

Told ya they wouldn't use it...

This is ridiculous; the deficit deserves far more concern than it is treated with in Washington. Adding another expensive entitlement program on top of Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security will only worsen the federal government's already dismal fiscal outlook.

We need healthcare reform a lot more than we needed Bush tax cuts or two wars in the middle east.

We do need real healthcare reform. Unfortunately, this bill is not it.

                    • Democrats Picking Off Stupak Supporters

House Democratic leaders appear to be succeeding in their push to peel off abortion-rights opponents lined up with Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) against a health care overhaul.

Stupak said those standing with him now number about six — down from the rough dozen he has claimed for weeks. That is likely enough to put the majority within striking distance of the 216 votes they need for passage.

“I don’t know if it’s enough,” Stupak said of those now backing him in demanding stricter language preventing public funding of abortion. “There’s rumors going back and forth. Last I heard they were short four and that was about an hour ago.”

Rep. Christopher Carney (D-Pa.) became the latest public defection from the Stupak coalition on Saturday when he declared he would vote for the bill. In a statement announcing his decision, Carney said the bill “continues the longstanding ban on public funding for abortion, a factor that weighed heavily on my mind in recent days.”
