I'm sure it was an ill-judged balance of the ironic value against the potential discriminatory effect.
Some people weigh them and get the balance right, knowing that irony - properly done - alleviates a host of rhetorical sins. Others make a clumsy attempt at it, flub it, and then go apesh!t, somehow blaming the readership for being unable to grasp their cackhanded humor. This is the majority of Poly.
I'd say the actual number of hardboiled racists here is relatively small, i.e. those who make statements completely devoid of ironic intent.
