Indeed, they might actually help the totalitarian state rise. Rile them up with the right mix of "down with the evildoers" (those guys over there!), give them a title (how about "defender of liberty") and maybe a uniform (something that looks vaguely minutemanish), and you've got the American Basij, no?If somehow these protections broke down tomorrow then the private ownership of guns wouldn't stop a totalitarian state from arising

not sure if this story has been mentioned. But it illustrates part of the problem of gun "ownership" in the U.S. Although you could argue that the war on drugs is meaningless and they should all be legalized- which would negate the gun problem in Mexico largely. But then organized crime may turn to some other vice to market.
This is why I favor gun control. Why not limit it to two guns? Registered nationally of course (I know what the 2nd ammendment says).Comment

Hrmpf, US could easily be gunfree in a few years :
Stop producing any guns except military (tighten security of this)
Make it obligatory to keep private guns in burglarproof cabinets.
Let law enforcement use a couple of years to collect illegitimate weapons.
Start banning civilians to have weapons including collection.
Start wars agains Canada, Mexico etc if they don't stop illegal gun export.With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
