  • Improving mental capacity

I've been on a self improvement kick lately as I alluded to in the overweight thread. In that same vein, I'd like to improve my mental capacity as well. What I'm asking for is two-fold:

The first thing is to improve my logic and reasoning skills. So I'm looking for websites with games that improve overall logic and reasoning skills. And perhaps games that can delay onset of Alzheimer's (which does run in my mother's side of the family) by "exercising" the brain.

A second thing I'd like to do is regain lost knowledge. I know I can't know everything. But the other day I was looking something up for someone at work to explain to them a scientific process. And was dismayed I forgot all about Charles and Boyle's laws. This was one of my best subjects in school, and I'm dismayed not to know this stuff anymore. I couldn't even remember what partial pressure was. And even when I was subtracting numbers the other day by hand, I had a little bit of trouble. That stuff scares me. . math was always my best subject (followed by chemistry mentioned above). So are there any websites where I can find this stuff? I'd like to find something where I can find like a chemistry textbook online- for free of course. I have no desire to pay for something that was free to me at one time.

Or should I just give up and admit I'm growing old and just drown my brain in alcohol?

relax, in 10 years they'll have a pill for you

My mother might have alzheimers, maybe not. Women live longer so they get more mental fatigue in a variety of forms. Ginko anyone? I hear some asian folk herbs help with mental faculty etc... Google it and I'm sure you'll find plenty of stuff

not a big believer in herbs. I find they have little to no effect.

                Read good books.

Take some courses at your local college/university, etc.

                      1. Read for at least an hour a day. A book, Apolyton does not count.

                      2. If you want to be good at math do math, if you want to be good at chemistry do chemistry. The only way to retain knowledge is to use it, your brain does a good job of taking out the trash on a regular basis. If you were good in those subjects back in the day and you really enjoyed them then relearning them will be easier than the first time you learned them.

                      3. Never go online without a purpose. The internet is a great tool, it is also worse than tv for brain rotting. Check your e-mail, pay the bills, play around for an hour, get off, then get off.

                      4. Study something for half an hour to an hour each day. Like your math and chemistry. Really learn it.

                      5. Exercise.

                      6.

Not in particular. It's all too easy to get sucked into the internet and do absolutely nothing productive, we all know that. If he wants to raise his perceived IQ he can't spend all evening dilly-dallying.

I meant the "get off, then get off" part. Actually, I was agreeing. Keep the porn to a minimum. Live.

The long term benefits of this commitment are astounding. 3 times a week at your age should do. Though you're a military guy and likely already know this?

How about Sodoku, try it for a week and see if you become hooked. Seems like a relaxing logic exercise for transit commutes.

Those brain age games on handheld Nintendo consoles are likely worth looking at if you're considering a well rounded routine that includes active entertainment (rather than passive, ie. watching TV)

Lastly, as previously mentioned, continue your education, even if on a minimal level. One course every six months in a subject of applied interest (or pertaining to good old math/logic). Who cares if it's informal continuing education, or post-secondary credit. The point is you're brain is being taxed; not stressed, but challenged to grow.

Lastly, realize that we all feel like retards without adequate long term memory now and again. Booze and even "mild" drugs likely make this a partial reality, so if you're dabbling in either on a consistent basis, it's time to make a big choice. Weekly neuro-chemical gratification, or the wit of a tiger
