  • Anybody taken a DNA test?

I note that 23andMe is charging only $400 for a test. Apparently, they test for health and ancestry traits.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Yes, in school. I don't think we looked for anything interesting though.

Was it part of a class, or did they test all students?

They were testing to see if any of the class were DDJs.

I wouldn't do it even if it was free. This is for the same reason that I would rather not be fingerprinted.

              What are your specific reservations?

Both. We did the testing ourselves. (Was an HS bio lab class.)

I have only ever taken DNA tests on mice. That was to find out which ones were homozygous gene-deficient, so we could bring them down to the lower dungeon and expose their eyes to the extra strong shampoos.

I've ordered plenty of people to take them, but never taken one myself. $400 seems like a pretty good rate, iirc.

I think they started charging $1,000 a couple of years ago. So these tests are dropping in price rather rapidly.

There was a distant cousin researching our family tree who wanted a male of my immediate family to take a DNA test for their use. I don't think I'll do that one, but I don't have any problem reporting these kinds of results to my immediate family. (Dad, I found out you're not my real dad! )

Yeah, the only way I'd want to do it is if it was somehow anonymous (in which case I'd be very curious).

Most veterans have their DNA stored in one or more places for identification purposes. So the tests wouldn't compromise their covertness. People who work n defense work have given their fingerprints often. So I can't be KH's accomplice. Darn!

I've never been fingerprinted or DNA analysed (to my knowledge )
