What she said was, "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

How does that not mean what che and Zkrib inferred?

Read the speech. There's a reason that the White House is claiming she misspoke rather than defending her words.

As for the original arguement she was making, To paraphrase Scalia Just as there is no Catholic way to a hamburger I would be hard pressed to see a Latina way to be a judge.

Cop out. Explain how that statement, in the context of her speech, can be construed as racist. You have to make an argument before others can counter it.

Translation: I'm too stupid to explain my incorrect position.

          Just give up DD.

I'm guessing I cross edited you. As there is an arguement in there.

This editorial gives an excellent summary of the problems I and others have with the speech: http://article.nationalreview.com/?q...c1ZjIzOTJiYjk=

You have no ideas of your own. And can't you do better than the national review? Even if you can't, why are you incapable of explaining your opinions?

Actually, those are rhetorical questions. I know exactly why you can't.

I'm not even sure the national review article is criticising her. It seems she's saying 'well gosh, maybe we all have our unique cultural point of view that informs our reasoning process, and so maybe that produces a different effect on judging.' Perhaps so. It doesn't make you any less impartial to admit as much. At no point has Sotamayor consciously thought or reasoned that her ethnicity was relevant to a given decision or case in a direct manner--that would be moronic, and frankly, grounds for removal. This is what so many articles seem to imply about her, but it has never happened in any of her hundreds of decisions. So again, cheap attempt to score political points.

Theben-- your stupid, I am American...I am Irish *check the avatar, its a family crest* I just work in China right now.

The whole reasoning behind my opposition to her quote goes into race and law. For race, I am Irish, my wife is Hispanic and we tend to both swing the same way on racial things, but in this case she made some bad judgment in words. When you speak about yourself and your actions to the general public the way it is heard is the importance. For example, when people ask me how I liked being a tanker, being a combat vet, I usually say things like I loved it, I miss my tank, I miss getting to shoot. That can be taken a few ways, 1 is that I am a gun toting Bush war zealot, a war monger. Or 2 that I was a soldier who believed in the oath, that I took my job seriously, that I appreciated and respected the power of the machine I worked on. The way that I heard her words is that she believes that a Latina from The Bronx with an under priviledged upbringing, bad grades in school, who rode the affirmative action wave all the way to her current position is smarter, wiser, and makes better calls than a white judge who was from the 'burbs, did well in school, that had to work hard to put himself through college, or whos family had a college fund, then had to work hard to get to their position. That is what I heard, that she is better than the hard worker who didnt have things given to them because of race.

On the other hand, law. For example, murder is wrong. Now what I hear from her and see from her is that if she had 2 cases of murder, 1 an 16 year old Mexican from South Central LA who murdered a man at a convenient store and stole money and 2 a white guy who murdered his wife for cheating....following me? From what I have perceived from Sotomayor's words and actions is that she would charge the 16 year old with something less, some lesser time, push that since he is from south central that he has no choices, that he was raised in violence and crime, that he deserves a 2nd chance. And that this white collar white man murdered his wife for cheating on him and he deserves to burn in hell for his crime. Maybe I am off base, but the point I am trying to make is that I don't care for judges who like to lean their decisions towards one race or another. My judgment on both of these examples, murder is muder end of story, kid gets 25 to life for murder and robbery, man gets 25 to life for murder.

For those of you who think I am just a right wing eccentric, your reading me wrong. I am a veteran combat soldier, I am a political activist, I am an EFL teacher, I have studied law, law enforcement, political science, and other non applying stuff. I am very well informed, I am an independent and a free thinker. I form my own decisions, not conform.

Exactly where did I say you were Chinese?

And I don't think you are just a right wing eccentric, but I do think you are a right wing eccentric.

It's *you're*, btw. You might want to at least spell all the words in the same sentence correctly when calling someone 'stupid'.

And I think it's funny when you wingnuts get all bent out of shape over one quote of hers, taken out of context. It's funnier when Laura Bush and Bush I say she should get fair hearings and think she would be an excellent choice. Unfortunately it shows just how wacko what remains of the GOP/conservative movement is when Bush I is to its left.

Were you as bent out of shape over Miguel Estrada? I fail to see the problem anyway. She's going to get a hearing and baring evidence she's secretly into necrophilia or the like is going to be confirmed.

Theben, you asked if Zaku was Chinese for ass. Just a bit stupid.

When I get to writing fast, or moving from one thing to another I tend to miss a few spelling mistakes. Thank you for pointing out the mistake. I'll point out one of yours, I am an independent. I am against socialist ideals, big government, higher or more taxes, the Fed, etc. When it comes to abortion, its your body and the gov should keep its head out of your business, so should everyone else. Personally I would never make my wife get an abortion, or my girl if I got an affair knocked up (not saying I have had one). I believe religion has NO place in government decisions. Income tax is illegal by the Constitution, that and that there is no law requiring it is why I don't file a 1040 anymore. I don't support troops being deployed to foreign war zones, yea I was combat soldier and went through that crap, but doesnt mean I support it. I do support the removal of tyrants, but not at the cost of constant back to back deployments. I do not believe in the UN having power over an US laws or policies, I do not believe in the IMF having any say in our budget matters. I don't support a lot of public programs, I am against prayer in public schools, I am for local government and a state's right to secede with a 70% vote. I am completely against universal health care, I am for more regulation on medical rates. I believe in the American dream, and that a persons income is their property and therefore not within the government's power to tax (life, liberty, and property shall not be infringed upon *income is property*). So call me right wing, doesn't matter much. I have been called a lot of things, right wing isn't the worst of them. But I am independent.

And yea she will receive her hearing, but voicing the people's opinion is prime to the subject. If the hearing neglects the voice of the people, it only goes to show the government doesn't work for us anymore. And no I do not mean if they vote in favor of her, I mean if they don't take notice into the certain aspects of her career that negate her commitment to justice over personal feelings.
