Yes and yes. DD has realized he has no case, so he's just repeating the same crap over and over again while covering his ears. I can't see Oerdin's movie, but I imagine it is that Family Guy clip with the donkey debating Kevin Bacon's role in "Footloose." That's exactly how I picture DD. Always.

Well, provided Malia had actually been knocked up at some point (presumably after growing several years older and hitting puberty), and thus there were context to make it funny...well, no, I still wouldn't laugh, I dislike Coulter too much. But if it were purely inane and nonsensical, I'd scratch my head and move on. I don't expect much sense from Coulter. See, it's more about who's saying it than what the joke is per se. Letterman's made a career out of being a jackass (with bad teeth). Palin shouldn't expect to be an exception--except insofar as she's now the political equivalent of a C-list celebrity, the unqualified token-chick Veep pick for a race we've all forgotten about already. But she's fighting like mad to stay in the spotlight, so even that doesn't hold water. If anything, Letterman's doing her a favor by giving her attention.

Sure, Letterman threw good taste and judgment out the window to get a cheap laugh. That's what he does, and he's been doing it for 30 years. Palin is a public figure, and she hasn't hesitated to use her family to further her career. So what makes that a one-way street?

This all would have passed without much comment if the Palins hadn't decided to make an issue of it -- virtually demanding that the joke be replayed incessantly for several days. Next, Sarah will probably make an appearance on Late Night to complete the Circle of Media Whoredom. Because that's her real concern.
