By the way, Wolfram Alpha rocks.

          Try doing any unit conversion.

The population in the year 20000 is projected to be 133.5 trillion.

It seems like a good idea, but I doubt its abilities.

What they're aiming for is one of those holy grail type of things, i.e. a computer that can understand plain English queries and find, aggregate and manipulate the relevant information to get a reasonable answer.

They're going to have a lot of the common questions answered, but are going to fail miserably on any of the less common ones.

It's a fascinating sand box. It's not meant to cook you breakfast.

That pop estimate gives a doubling time of 1262 years, assuming constant exponential growth.

                What a silly underestimate.

Wolfram Alpha is such a silly thing. I imagine amthematics is its strong point though, and seems like it would be the easiest component to implement

The formatting and graphing of equations alone is well worth the bookmark.

                      Wolfram Alpha

Seems pretty cool. Obviously not a Google replacement, but pretty useful. Inputs are pretty intuitive. For example:

Works well as a calculator (my guesses for inputs worked on the first try)
                      http://www91.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=fourier(1)
                      http://www91.wolframalpha.com/input/...27(t)%3D-w+x(t)
                      http://www91.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=d(x^2+tanh(x))%2Fdx

But it has other semi-useful functions. 'Specially like the time series:
Wolfram|Alpha brings expert-level knowledge and capabilities to the broadest possible range of people—spanning all professions and education levels.

Some other searches don't have time series:
Wolfram|Alpha brings expert-level knowledge and capabilities to the broadest possible range of people—spanning all professions and education levels.

The non-calculator capability still needs to be worked on. It's missing a lot of data. Murder rate. Government revenues. Porn industry.
"Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way. "

I prefer http://www.wolframsbeta.com/ , which has the answer to all questions. None of that "Wolfram|Alpha isn't sure what to do with your input.".

What's really cool about this is the supercomputer they're using to do all of this. I think it's the 66th fastest in the world.
