Yeah, the doofus signed the agreement. But this does not negate the sheer stupidity of the religious fundies in this story by the fact that they made these asinine rules to begin with.Originally posted by rah View PostNormally I would just laugh at the religious wack jobs but in this one I have to agree with the wackos.
The kid signed a statement of cooperation at the beginning of the school year. He should be bound by that regardless of the location or suffer the consequences of not cooperating.

When my daughter was in high school she tried out and joined the pom pom squad. They (and all the student athletes) were required to sign an agreement of zero tolerance in regards to booze. If they were caught with booze or at any party where it was being served, bang, off the team. It didn't matter where they were caught. Even if it was a different state. I think it was a great policy, and as a result, most of the people that signed the agreement held their own parties which were pretty much booze free.

One might argue that the agreement was silly, but then he shouldn't have signed it. If that meant not attending that school fine, but he did sign it and should live up to it.

And as said before, comparing kissing and dancing with underage drinking makes no sense - the two are entirely of different levels.A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

What if the kid was sitting in someone elses car, and the driver puit a rock radio station on? He's to be suspended right?

What about walking along a road where others have rock stations playing in their cars with the windows open?

Or ghetto blasters? (if they still exist?)You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

Are there no legal protections pertaining to the right to attend the local school?Originally posted by Japher View PostIt's an expulsion, not legal prosecution"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Didn't think of the minor aspect of the signing but since the school doesn't need to provide cause for what they're doing, that may not matter. (NOT BETTING MY LIFE ON THIS SO DON"T make this the focus of your arguement)Originally posted by Krill View PostNot really. Cheerleaders who get busted for underage drinking are breaking the law just by drinking. They should get busted from the squad for that.

This guy is going to a prom. I'm thinking that's not illegal in most states (don't know about Utah).

 Hardly a fair comparisson.

Also, you can make minors sign a binding contract? First I've heard about that...

It's not illegal to be at a party where underage drinking is occuring, so I don't think your comparison is valid. Whether the activity is illegal is immaterial to the agreement. If some girl signs an agreement that she won't get pregnant (which isn't illegal) and the preceeds to, I think the school would be well within their rights to punish the girl.

THe kid signed an agreement. (agian the minor aspect I'm not going to argue)It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

 This statement
they have already agreed to.......this might mean that the parents were involved which could avoid the "minor" arguement, or at least make it a grey area."For the parents to claim any injustice regarding this issue is at best forgetful and at worst disingenuous," he said. "It is our hope that the student and his parents will abide by the policies they have already agreed to."

I'll stick with my original statement.
It's silly and stupid but if the family signed an agreement, then they should abide by it.It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

Well, gotta admit I misread the booze part of your point. Didn't see that it included any party they were at.

Now, how conspicuous would the booze have to be? A keg in the back room with the majority of the people there drinking would, while being bollocks in my opinion, be justified because the cheerleaders would be able to see what is happening and walk out the door (and if they were stopped from that then I think they would have a pretty damned good arguemnt for false imprisonment myself, so I doubt the team would be the first thing to cros the mind of any sane individual).

OTOH, if the cops broke up the party and found 2 intoxicated being drunk upstairs from a private hipflask etc? Would the shool really push to kick off the cheerleaders then? I reckon they'd be lenient because the cheerleaders aren't going to know there was alcohol there and so can't be blamed for that.

The use of discretion would be very important there, just as it is in the above article. You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

Not allowed in all cases. Sometimes if the schools are in the same district, I've heard of this happening but not because rules were broken.Originally posted by onodera View PostHe should just go take his exams in the school where his girlfriend's from.
