One of the few times he has seriously answered an issue, also.

The reason why the Democrats, however, are so clearly seen as being opposed to segregation is because of LBJ. LBJ made Civil Rights a major part of his administration's political effort.

Starting with Nixon, the GOP began courting Dixiecrats. That process was completed under Reagan, although, even many older Southerners are still registered Democrats when they haven't voted Democrat in decades. That little fact caused a lot of confusion in Florida in 2000, when "solidly" Democratic counties in North Florida voted for Bush. What outsiders failed to understand is that North Florida isn't like South Florida. South Florida is basically New Jersey South. North Florida is very much part of the Old South.

It's not at all unusual for people to look back in history through the lenses of the present. It's practically a requirement for a Libertarian.

Barry Goldwater voted against the Civil Rights Act of '64. Nixon won the WH based on courting segregationists. Reagan said he'd vote against the Voting Rights Act. The Republicans became roughly uniformly anti civil rights as soon as the Democratic leadership de-segregated the country.
