    But I will give you this much - anti-slavery was not the ONLY position on which the Republican party was founded. Other issues, such as big business support, allowed Republicans to broaden support for their new party.
    A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

      Yep. Those evil, evil Democrats decided to end segregation so the South flipped Republican and never looked back.

      Civil Rights Act of 1964 - Vote Totals

      The original House version:[9]

      * Democratic Party: 152-96 (61%-39%)
      * Republican Party: 138-34 (80%-20%)

      The Senate version:[9]

      * Democratic Party: 46-21 (69%-31%)
      * Republican Party: 27-6 (82%-18%)

      The Senate version, voted on by the House:[9]

      * Democratic Party: 153-91 (63%-37%)
      * Republican Party: 136-35 (80%-20%)

      Also note that it was Democrats that filibustered the Civil Rights Act in the Senate, not Republicans.

        Thanks for answering your own question. You don't join the Whigs (or the Northern Whigs, aka, the Republicans) if the only thing you cared about was slavery.

          The original House version:

          Southern Democrats: 7-87 (7%-93%)
          Southern Republicans: 0-10 (0%-100%)
          Northern Democrats: 145-9 (94%-6%)
          Northern Republicans: 138-24 (85%-15%)
          The Senate version:

          Southern Democrats: 1-20 (5%-95%)
          Southern Republicans: 0-1 (0%-100%)
          Northern Democrats: 45-1 (98%-2%)
          Northern Republicans: 27-5 (84%-16%)
          A bit more telling.

            How so? It still shows that the Democrats were overwhelmingly the anti-civil rights party.

                Roughly three times as many Democrats voted against the Civil Rights Act in both the House and the Senate.

                    Basically, the repugs were always pro civil rights. More voted for it in mid-60s than Demos. The Southern Demos were all segregationalists on race...but conservaiteve otherwise.

                    When the Demos joined the Repukes in being pro-civil rights, the South decided to go Repug.

                      Sometimes you make NO SENSE.

                      If majority of white Southerners were against civil rights in 1950s and 1960s, and your claim that Republicans decided to support civil rights, why the **** would white Southerners choose to JOIN the Republicans?

                        You do not get a brownie.

                        Even given that a number of people joined the Republican party for economic/business issues, there were many other people who joined the Republican party in 1850s because they were so strongly anti-slavery.

                        You cannot say that there were no such thing as anti-slavery people joining the Republican party primarily on that issue (slavery) because there were, indeed, people joined the Republican party only caring about the slavery issue even if they disagreed with that party's position on other issues.

                            Must not be about that then must it, you'll notice that without Republican support it would not have passed.

                                Byrd and Clinton's mentor (Fulbright?) voted against the '64 act I think. The northern Dems were newer and went for civil rights but they were at odds with southern Dems with seniority and pull, even whats his name, the old timer from SC - the guy with the little red wig, must have been 100 when he retired a few years back. Strom Thurmond, the Dixiecrats

                                btw, those numbers are amazing. Shows how well the Dems have brainwashed me into believing they were the party of civil rights and the Repugs are the racist party.
