I went over and looked around mainly to see what the crap was going on and a curious thing happened. I got kind of pissed off at those who I saw posting over there. In my mind i know it is just a damn website but it did piss me off a little. Poly has been the one conssistent place online that I have always stopped by at through times when I had interent 24/7 to when I could only check it once every two weeks or once a month. It matters, I don't know exactly how it matters but it does matter. But I've always been a sentimental bastard like that.

In vanilla Civ 4 you could research up to Code of Laws and build the Oracle, timed to finish the same turn as CoL and take Civil Service as the free tech - giving a huge commerce and hammer boost in the capital (and be able to irrigate beyond river tiles). People thought it was impossible above the lowest levels, but missed the point that a lib and two scientists, followed by an academy if the Great Scientist popped, could be used to drive the research. It could actually work up to Monarch.

It got nerfed in Warlords when an extra tech was added to the requisites for Civil Service.

Aeson documented the strat here and it entered the pantheon of opening gambits.

It's still in there; hard to pull off but I've seen demogame teams do it and it's common in succession games when they MM everything.
