I've never been in a riot, but I can say that the small amount of riot training I had as a soldier sucked. *******s throwing crap at you and you're not allowed to go crack their skulls. You're praying they come close enough so you can "defend yourself".

I can say that the edge of the shield can be a very effective weapon; even better than the club in the right situation.

We don't get issued shields I think that you have to go through the longer Civil Disturbance Unit course in order to get those. We have to make due with Darth Vader-style helmets and gloves, shin pads and a baton that's several times thicker than the ASP. Never mind that you're already wearing kevlar and twenty pounds of gear and it's already hitting 90+ on the thermometer in DC. Luckily for MPD most protests are pretty tame; I can't remember the last time there was rock throwing or other similar incidents.

Actually, they probably did not vote Democrat since civil rights movement of 1960s.

Yes, there have been and still are some right-wing Democrats. I thought we're talking "political spectrum" here. Left/right. Not political parties.
